Royal Navy Records

I recently obtained the marriage certificate for a relative (marriage in Dublin 1922) where his occupation is listed as "Sailor R. Navy". I assume the "R" stands for Royal. I'm wondering is there a source for Royal Navy records - online preferably - where I could check his service record. I'm pretty sure he was an ordinary able seaman, not an officer.
    Any information or suggestions welcomed.

National Archives UK (Kew) have many Military and Navy records. You can download some of these for a fee, some collections are FOC - Look for the Document On Line section. Site is a little awkward to navigate.

I know some Navy records are held in another location... I've seen them visit it on WDYTYA UK - dont remember the name, but there were two giant guns outside if that helps!

There are various UK Military records on Ancestry and FindMyPast UK, but not sure if the include Navy.

I think it is this place on WDYTYA:

The guns I was thinking of seem to be outside a branch of The Imperial War Museum in Lambeth

Think it would be better to start the search with the Maritime Museum and National Archives.

I got the record from the UK National Archives using the link you provided. It shows that my relative spent 12 years in the Royal Navy and has a full list, with dates, of the ships he served in.
The Mariners mailing List link revealed that ships' logs are held in the Archives too. I will pursue that lead to see if I can find what the ships my relative served in were doing during his time with them.

    Many thanks for your help.
