iPad screen fail

I have an original ipad and recently half of the screen has stopped working. I was busy working on the ipad, put it down for a mintue and when I picked it up again the left half the screen ( vertical split ) had done black with a few coloured lines and was non responsive. Has this happened to anyone else and if so, is it…

You need a new digitizer, it usually only happens if the iPad got a bang
