    Hi guys

Not sure what forum to out this in, think this is closest one..

Just wondering I obtained my provisional license before the 12 lesson rule came in - finally getting around to apply for my driving test now, anyone know if I still need to take 12 driving lessons even thought I obtained my learner permit BEFORE that rule came in?

Cheers guys, do you have any links which confirms this, looked at RSA site, and can't see anything!

    EDIT: Never mind:

Do I need to do EDT?
If your first learner permit for a car (code 991 in the column headed restrictions/information) is dated on or after 4th April 2011(look at the date in the column headed ό/from), you must complete EDT. All learner drivers must have completed EDT before they can sit a driving test.

    Driver Training
    Important notice for learner drivers
If the date of issue on your first learner permit is on or after 4 April 2011, you must complete Essential Driver Training (EDT) before you are allowed to take your full driving test.
EDT is not required if your first learner permit was issued before 4 April 2011.

Essential driver training is essentially a load of muck anyway. Comparing what my mates have done over here, even 5/6 lessons in, compared to what I did in my first lesson in Germany is pretty meager in comparison. Either they should introduce a proper system of essential lessons (i.e 2 hours at night, 2 hours in the country, 2 hours in the city, 2 hours on the motorway) that must be completed before you do the license, or you may as well not bother at all.

The learners Permit as such, should be scrapped. Learner drivers should only be driving with a proper instructor, parents are not qualified to be instructing a learner driver. Add in a few mandatory lessons, simply so learners have experience in all traffic and road conditions. Then you can remove that whole 6 month lark. That takes drivers initial ability into account. Some may only need the mandatory lessons and be a perfectly capable driver, while others are going to need more time. At least this cuts out the silly situation where people are waiting around 6 months and driving around without a license because they're perfectly able to drive anyway in practical terms. The Irish system is silly, and it's perfectly easy to create a system that will not only enable a driver to pass within a few weeks, but also see them safer drivers in the process. The possibility to drive accompanied is a bit of a backwards idea really and calling people competent drivers when they've never set foot on the motorway is also ludicrous. There's a massive difference to driving 60 on a dual carriage way and 120 on the motorway.
