Hi, I wonder how is it in UCD with languages? Is it obligatory to learn some or you can jus pick them as elective modules?

Only obligatory if you happen to pick them as your degree. You can take them as electives both through Arts or the Applied Language Centre

Does anybody know the main differences between doing it through arts or the applied languages centre?

If you do it through arts, then your degree will be a BA in Spanish/Chinese/Pig Latin. You'll study the literature and culture extensively, and take multiple courses per semester in the language. It will be the focus of your study.

If you do it through the ALC, then your degree will not reflect it (just your full transcript if someone happens to look), and you'll learn the language and a bit of culture. It will be at most one class a semester for as long as you choose to do it, which you're not at all obliged to do. Essentially it's like taking a night class once a week in that language.

Assessment is different. More languages offered in the language centre. Arts would be more in depth with the language centre being more general.

You can compare two here. One is French Language 1a with is arts, the other French General Purposes 1. I'm considering taking Italian if I don't get one of my electives.

Thanks! What I really meant was what's the difference between the classes if I take them as electives. I get what you mean about more general in the APL or whatever. Anything other significant differences?
