    Hello there!

    I just got accepted into this said course in GMIT but haven't done a science subject since Junior Cert and even then I failed Science but I don't think that was due to Chemistry, more so Physics and Biology. Anyways, I didn't do it for the Leaving Cert and wanted to know:

    Will it be a really tough time doing Chemistry without doing it for 3 years? How hard can it get? I ask these as I just want to have a fair idea of what to expect this coming year

    Thanks :)

    First a question, Why you you choose a science degree for 3rd level when you did not choose any science subject for LC?
    Modules for this course are:
    Chemistry;= Chemistry probably what you are familiar with, Atoms, Periodical tables not a big leap from LC chemistry.
    Analytical Techniques;NMR, GC, MS, HPLC
    Computing;
    Microbiology; Bacterial, cell structure viruses gram +/- etc
    Separations Science; Internal standards, countercurrent etc Good level of maths required
    Quality Management;
    Drug Synthesis; Organic/Inorganic Chemistry

    Quite a lot of analytical chemistry which a good level is maths based.Best to start reading up on the basics LC standard in chemistry and the rest will come, go to your lectures and keep up with the program, there is a lot of work involved with a science degree and is fairly fast paced. Best of luck.

    I chose it because I have interest in the subject but just never had the chance to grasp it. However this time around it is the only thing I need to focus on whereas in school there would have been English, Irish, Stair.

    Also, I had to take Phys/Chem or Stair and seeing that I got a B3 in Stair then it was a good choice as I always knew I would do well in it.

    Yeah the course is pretty much more Pharmaceutical Sciences rather than Chemistry so that is where my interest would be so that's good to see.

    The course itself states that the basics/fundamentals of Science subjects will be covered in the first year so hopefully that helps.

    I did pharm and biomed chem and the synthesis will be especially hard. Even people that did well in LC chem were bamboozled by it. It takes a certain kind of mind to be good at chemical synthesis
