Lost car keys, where to start

Have brought my late dads 1988 CITROEN BX 16TRS AUTO back from Spain. Have lost keys and cannot start it to get it to NCT for Irish registration. Any ideas (polite & inoffensive) on where to start.
    Thank you.

you'll need to find some keys (scrapyard lockset perhaps..longshot...ebay maybe?) or hotwire it or trailer it to get it to the NCT

perhaps a Mod would split this into a new thread?

Good idea on keys. Thank you

You need a key for the NCT so no point in hotwiring or trailoring.

    Last place you had them?

    :D

Sorry, had to be done. Your best bet is a breakers to see if you can get an ignition barrel and door locks etc.. From a donor car and switch all the existing ones with them.

Thank you, Cushie. That thought struck me too. I knew this was not going to be easy. If everyone on Boards.ie is as helpful as you, I may get it sorted...eventually. Again, Thank you.

if the lockset for the car is the same ie the 1 key works all the locks and ignition remove 1 of the barrels and bring it ti a locksmith they should be able to make you a key being a 1988 car i doubt it has an imobeliser or remote central locking etc so it dosent need to be programmed

Excellent idea. Will try that. Strange but it does have a central locking system, albeit, by turning the key (if I had one) Anyway, thank you. :)

Someone has suggested waiting another year as it may become a "classic". (Is a classic 25 or 30 years ?) Are there advantages in this ?

would it not be the case where you would ring up citreon and give the chassie number and they would be able to match up a new set of keys for you and send them over for you.

i dont think you'll need a key to re-register it...you will certainly fro the NCT test but that comes after.

You have to bring the car to them so they can verify the chassis number etc. Also the logbook.

    Thus probably costing more.

Gonna cost a fortune to get sorted. could be 7-800 for new locks and keys.

Would you not just declare it off the road and see if a set of locks pop up on ebay. Maybe go to a citreon enthusiast forum and put out an ad for locks. Say your desperate etc.. and car has lots of sentimental value.

Thank you, Media999. Have been contacted by Citroen Ireland, who can organise a key ; once that is done. I will rely on "posts" from people like you to give me ideas on how to get her on the road. Besides wishing to drive her, I have the idea of entering Classic Drives, to raise some money for charity... Just a thought...
