Hi all, has anyone got a suggestion for cleaning the inside of a coolant expansion tank.? changing the coolant/antifreeze on my car and there is a thin layer of soft brown gunge on the inside wall of the tank/bottle.
Its quite easy to remove the tank but flushing with water makes no impact, i can clean what i can reach easily with a cloth. Powerwasher is not an option as there is a plastic indention 1 inch from the filler cap. Any ideas welcome.
    Thanks.

I'd be more concerned as to where the oily stuff is coming from. Are you having cooling issues currently?

    What car is it?

No, its not oily at all. its a friends car (peugeot 207) which had a leaking water pump for quite a while, kept topping it up with water from a "hard water" area. very similar to what you get on the inside of a kettle in these areas.
water pump replaced now and new coolant, just wanted to give the tank a clean look as the rest of the car and engine is mint.
BTW, since first post another guy suggested i remove the tank, plug the ports, half fill it with hot water and dishwasher salt, replace the cap and shake vigourously. Repeated this a few times and actually worked very well.
Flushed tank several times with cold water before replacing in the car.
