I heard a story that a major private TV company in the UK is now planning to launch to their viewers a new online catch up service. This would provide content which has to be paid for; once they register to a new account. This would be happening until after they would reform their media player site.

This is the story from the Guardian.

The TV company being talked about is ITV. ITV Pay Player has trialled on 5,000 PC's. Their seven day catch up service with ads however, would remain free.

The question is though, would that sort of system count as being economically viable on the RTE Player or the 3 Player in the future?

I watch very little of RTÉ or TV3, I pick up UK channels on freeview and in my opinion there's more on their channels worth watching. Also given the fact that most stuff can be watched online that people have uploaded from recording off their TV it wouldn't be something I'd bother with. The launch of Netflix in Ireland has given the option of watching series and films for a cheap rate. I don't believe that RTÉ or TV3 has that much worth paying for. So I wouldn't pay for it, it doesn't stop it being in place in the future, but they'd be more in line if they'd cut some pay for the likes of Pat Kenny and co and put a bit more money into making stuff worth watching. TV3 has gone down the route of "reality tv" which came from the UK and previously America with the likes of Tallaghfornia and Dublin Wives or whatever it's called. TV3 have failed at producing an Irish Deal or no Deal and I don't think "Reality tv" is the way to go, even though people seem to like society's more intellectually challenged being exploited.
