    I too would like to know the answer to OP's query? what type of bike would even be most appropriate? hybrid/racing?

    You'll struggle to find a decent racer for the budget you are talking about. May be worth considering a fixie/single speed if your journey is relatively flat - you'll probably get the best value out of something like that with drop-bar options available (and easy/cheap maintenance, with less to go wrong than on a multi-speed bike)

    Not a lot of knowledge to do with bikes but I would suggest something not too flashy that will attract an attention of a would be bike thief.
