I've been wanting to travel for ages. I found this BUNAC program where you can get a visa to work for the summer. There are other sites like BUNAC I heard they were the best. They have other camp roles or other jobs you can apply for. I was thinking of doing the KAMP program http://www.bunac.org/uk/kampusa/proginfo.aspx where you get placed at a camp to work for 9 weeks and I think after there's a chance to travel. It seems like a great opportunity and it'd be nice to do something different during the summer. I've always wanted to go to America too but there's no one to go with.

Is anyone else thinking of travelling to USA to work next summer?
Has anyone worked in America for the summer?

I went on a J1 through USIT a few years back. Lived and worked in LA. I landed on my feet there and got a really good job, but my friends weren't so lucky. I would advise you to apply for as many jobs as possible before you go, just in case the camp thingy doesn't work out.
I met some people who worked in the camps and they absolutely loved it. Most of them went alone and just met a load of people there doing the same thing and ended up going traveling with them.
I would advise you to seriously think about traveling alone though. It sounds great but you need to consider if you DON'T meet other people traveling, if you have any issues while you're away who is going to be there to help ya out, do you get home sick easily etc etc etc
I think it's a great idea and it will be an experience you will remember forever so if you're sure you will be ok traveling alone then GO FOR IT!!

I did a J1 through USIT many years ago, are you looking to go to a particular place in America or not fussy?

I wanted to be in Manhattan and found it difficult to get work as we were told many people leave the city to go on holidays so there are not so many people in the city and therefore not so many jobs (I was looking for a shop job).

We travelled to Wildwood, New Jersey for a day and secured a job in the fun fair and were directed to a house to share with 5 other Irish girls, a holiday destination like this there will be many part time jobs available and maybe you could arrange one beforehand if you contact them through their website. IMO this would be a great destination for someone travelling alone as it will be easy to meet people in a similar situation. I have travelled alone before but not in USA and it is a great opportunity and experience once you are prepared in advance.

    Good Luck
