How does one go about getting a restraining order against someone who has not been violent yet but has threatened to do so?

Is it possible to get a restraining order against a former housemate who just recently was evicted for violent tendencies to stop them coming anywhere near their former house/other tenants?

Ireland don't do restraining orders outside of a domestic violence situation. To be eligible you must have been living in the same house for at least 6 of the last 12 months in a non contractual relationship.

We believe this person to be mentally "unbalanced" and very agressive.

If I went to the Gardai would that achieve anything?

Went into the garda station today to suss things out and see where I stood and if they could evict him if he refused to go after the landlord served him notice...
