Hi. i plugged a pcmia card (a so called mpeg4 card) into my technika tv tonight. I selected 'Conditional Access' from the menu but i got a message saying 'Common Interface Module card not detected'. Has anyone ever used one of these in their tv set and have you got them to work? Perhaps i have it in the wrong way around?

I don't think they work, lots of discussion on them here in the forum in previous years (do a search in the forum).

Well they do work but only in certain TV's and even then they wont decode HD despite Neotions claims a few years back. Its one of the reasons why CI was replaced by CI+ which is now a uniform standard. There was too many variations of CI slot implementation.

There used to be a sticky here but I got it de-stickied when a dedicated HD station came about.

There is no way of enabling MPEG2 hardware other than getting a STB.

Neotion in person told me at IBC Amsterdam that the MPEG2 to MPEG4 converter inherently can never do HD.

It was for a particular Pay TV service. Not ever meant to be a solution to HD MPEG4.

There is NO way EVER to make a CI slot on an MPEG2 TV do HD. RTE2 is transmitted in HD format even when it's SD. The same will be true for TV3, TG4 and RTE1 eventually.

A second problem is that MPEG4 services even in SD are meant to be marked as MPEG4 so that REAL MPEG4 TVs and boxes decode properly. MPEG2 TVs are supposed to not even tune in non-MPEG2 services. The CI slot and thus the CAM can ONLY process data of a tuned in station. In a PROPERLY implemented MPEG4 only service and PROPERLY implemented MPEG2 TV the Neotion or other MPEG2 to MPEG4 conversion CAMs can't work even for SD. Even if it was CI+

    This is by design.

If the TV was bought inside the last 2 years and you can prove purchase even from only debit or credit card, then Tesco are obliged to take the TV back it you bought it in the Irish State. It's not fit for purpose.

I see in local Tesco they are trying to sell a 42" obsolete Sony that won't work here. Shame on them.

Is there a clear warning with the TV that it cannot receive Saorview??
If there is, I do not see what the big deal is in having it for sale.
If there is no warning I would agree shame on them.

Many TVs have been bought over the years where the tuner has never been used by the purchaser (used only for games or tapes/DVD playback).
Some people may be intent to stay with Sky/cable so do not need the DTT tuner, if that is their choice.

People using Saorview are often going to want FTA satellite also, so they are going to need a STB anyway, be it a FTA satellite box with a Saorview TV, or a combi box with a non-Saorview capable TV. (unless we are dealing with a very expensive TV that can do DVB-S built-in!)

I was in a house recently and in the kitchen saw a new Philips TV connected to a combi box. The TV was in fact Saorview approved, but no aerial was ever connected. The retailer apparently advised the combi box sold with the TV, (rather than a cheaper FTA satellite box). Admittedly it is awkward to switch to-and-fro between HDMI and terrestrial reception on that TV, compared with using a combi box receiving all TV channels. It would make life a lot easier if a HDMI (or SCART) input could as an option be assigned to one of the TV's single digit channel numbers (say 9) as if it were an analogue modulator input.

If it can't decode broadcast TV signals then it's not a TV , it's a monitor and not fit for purpose as a TV.

Slightly off topic when will UPC be killing off analogue ?

No one knows. They are keeping their analogue service going for the forseeable future.

If you currently receive your analogue TV service from UPC this service will continue to be available in its current format after the national analogue switch off takes place. You will not need to make any changes to your service or purchase any additional equipment.

Sony has had MPEG-4 models on the market here since 2008, I'd have thought their complete range would've been MPEG-4 for the last few years. Any idea of the model no. of the Sony in Tesco?
