Recording with Saorview

My parent's current setup is aerial in attic (not compatible with saorview) is linked into the video recorder and that's linked to the tv. Now with a new tv and aerial they're buying, will the same setup still work? There's no decoder box involved as the tv has the tuner in-built.

Why do you think the attic aerial isn't compatible with Saorview? Do they currently receive analogue TV3 with the aerial?

The VCR won't be able to record Saorview, no digital tuner, but it should continue to record the existing analogue channels as before until analogue is switched on Oct 24th. By that date there may be Saorview PVRs available to record the Saorview channels.

We do receive TV3 albeit barely, it's a very weak signal. I thought you had to get an outdoor aerial for Saorview. Well, no odds anyway, given its age (likely older than me) and the hassle in adjusting it (suspended by baling twine from the rafters), an outdoor one is just easier.

Ah crap, that's what I was afraid of :/ Since my parents aren't that good with technology, I can't see them getting a PVR especially when they bought a MPEG4 TV specifically so they wouldn't need an extra box (as well as getting rid of the ancient tv they currently have).

    Thanks for the info :)

Saorview does recommend a rooftop aerial but in some cases where the Saorview signal strength/quality is very good an attic or even a set-top/rabbit-ears aerial will work.

A weak analogue TV3 could also indicate the wrong aerial type/group, aerial pointing to a transmitter not carrying analogue TV3 (and maybe Saorview) etc. etc. Good idea to go with a professionally installed outdoor aerial.

If the aerial in the attic is a VHF type (maybe similar to this one) for a transmitter carrying analogue RTÉ1/2 in the VHF band, when it is replaced with a Saorview UHF aerial the analogue RTÉ1/2 channels may not be available for recording by the VCR.

Aye, handier to just it done this time and not have to worry about it again. At least we don't have to shout up and down from the attic to say when the signal is best now with Saorview :D

We probably could get a good TV3 but it'd be at the expense of a good RTE and since we have UTV on satellite, there's no real need for ITV Ireland TV3.

Also note the edit I made while you were writing your last post re: VHF aerial.

Can you not plug your VCR into the scart socket on the saorview TV? Also does this mean VCRs will be obsolute after the analogue signal is switched off as regards recording off ther TV?

The vcr will not become any more obsolete than it already is, you can connect a saorview box scart output from the saorview box to the vcr input.

I intend buying a saorview tv in the next few weeks. If it has a scart socket (as the samsung one i'm looking at does) can i record off it?

Only the channel selected on the TV.
