A vw Touareg would be worse on diesel than a Renault Clio, a Renault laguna would be worse than a vw polo.

    You see where I'm going?

What's your budget, how big a car do you need etc

Ya sorry i should have been more precise. Ya the most economical 1.9 diesel car. Or car-van. Around €1000 to 2000 budget

    Had a Mondeo 2.0 TDCi, got between 45 - 50 mpg.

Avensis td. Good mpg, some will do better
main advantage is that they're unburstable. No fancy stuff.

Not sure but spending 15k+ on a car to save 5mpg isn't one of them and it's worth keeping in mind :p

Was looking at the van option but insurance companys are strict

Van option you will need to be able to prove you are using it for a commercial reason and if you are you will pay through the nose insirancewise tbh.

406 HDI imo with leather, also time on the road isn't very accurate, distance and type of driving would give a more accurate picture of what you need

If you're going through toll bridges bear the commercial toll rate in mind

    But seriously if you posted.

    Daily milage
Type of driving motorway/main roads/town driving etc
    Budget
    Badge/brand/spec preference
    Running costs budget

You would get a much clearer picture, as it stands i would suggest a low noughties 406 Hdi or if you have a little more to spend a newer 407 or Citroen C5

Ya basically want something cheap to run compared to say a 1.4 petrol

    80 miles daily.
    Around 90 bhp.
    Budget 1000-2000 euro.
Dont mind paying the extra bit on tax if i save money.
A mixture of back roads and motorway

Sure beats the hell out of a van, really nice car to be in also.

It's what i would buy anyway, puts a passat tdi to shame in terms of comfort and driving experience
