Need advice for first car newbie

I'll hopefully be able to get a car/licence around this time next year so I was just looking for a bit of advice.

The two car makes that I am looking into buying are either BMW or VW, I've been checking up on classifields online and you seem to be able to get a decent year (2005) BMW 1 series with not so much mileage for around €5-€7k versus a Golf/Polo (2000ish) for around €2-€3k.

Q1 Which car would I be better off buying? (insurance, tax, petrol wise) Although the BMW may be more expensive it might be cheaper in the long run as it's a car I can drive for years vs a polo where people feel that by a certain age you will have to 'upgrade'.

Q2 What companies are doing the best prices at the moment? I've tried to find quotes online but it seems you need a car to get a quote yet I don't want to buy a car without having a quote  What price range should I be expecting for road tax/insurance for 19 year old girl?

Q3 Is it cheaper off for myself to get insured on my parents car (12 golf) or to get a car/insurance of my own?

With insurance ring around is the best advice. Try absolutely everyone for a price. There are so many variables the company that is good value for one may not be for another.

It's also insanity spending a big lump on a first car. You're more likely. Have a scrape or two so something cheap for the first year is the best.
