Your shouldn't need to change your aerial if you have a good tv3 picture.

The aerial in that picture looks OK for Saorview.

See Saorview's guidelines on existing aerials - http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/step-2-check-aerial/

Grid UHF aerial is fine once it's pointing in the correct direction, or give a professional Installer a buzz, advise is free.

So if you can receive tv3,tg4,rte 1 and 2 your aerial should be fine?that aerial in the pic is about 12 years old now I think,my parents have me driven demented, they think we need a new aerial and when I try to explain to them we don't

The aerial pictured is a wideband UHF aerial, so will work with Saorview if sufficient signal is available. It may need realigning to a different transmitter: what part of the country are your parents in?

If you have a good tv3 picture and also recieve TG4 then you will probably be fine for Saorview. You could run into problems with the type of cable or aerial alignment etc but try first, if it doesnt work get a competent installer to advise on what needs to be done.

TV3 is only broadcast on UHF whereas some older transmitters (e.g. Kippure, Three Rock, Maghera) transmit RTE1/2 on VHF and TV3/TG4 on UHF. That's why a poster above asked about TV3, forget about RTE for the purposes of this issue.

If your parents can receive TV3 today, it means they have a UHF aerial (which is obvious from the photo anyway) and that aerial will be fine for Saorview because Saorview is broadcast as a UHF channel. If you want to be 100% certain, give us a rough idea where your parents live and the direction the aerial is pointing.

There is a whole load of cowboys talking BS about 'digital' aerials in order to convince people that they need a new aerial for Saorview, most do not.

There's no need to keep banging on about TV3 or TG4, as it's plain to see the aerial in question here is suitable for all UHF tv frequencies.

Saorview is available from plenty of transmitters that never broadcast analogue TV3 & some no analogue at all.

You signal then is coming from Spur Hill a couple of miles away, you will have no problems picking up saorview with your current aerial.

The Saorview coverage map recommends the Spur Hill site & you're more than likely receiving from there already, since you have a horizontally polarised UHF aerial & no VHF.

Yes there is. The OP needs to give his/her parents reassurance and the TV3/TG4 test is the simplest and easiest to explain.
