Concern about Eye condition

I have had some discomfort in my eyes for the best part of a year now. I've always had dry tear ducts and am generally quite prone to eye infections - never really anything serious, conjunctivitus a couple of times but usually nothing worse than some redness, itchyness here and there etc. I have no allergies, I gather any eye problems I ever have are as a result of not looking after them well enough considering I have 'dry eyes'.

I got them lazered four years ago last January.

Anyway, I went to an Eye doc about three months ago as the left one in particular was quite sore. He gave me an antibiotic drop which helped and I was also given an over-the-counter eye 'moisturiser' which also helped. A friend recommened Murine eye drops which also were a big help in clearing up the redness and general discomfort.

So that helped initially but in the past couple of weeks the same discomfort and redness has returned. So I went back to my Eye doc yesterday and he prescribed a gel called Chloromycetin to be taken only at night before I go to bed. He also gave me an over-the-counter drop called Artelac. I took the Artelac a couple of times yesterday without noticing any particular difference.

I then took the Chloromycetin before bed. It felt a bit uncomfortable and this morning I woke up with roaring red eyes and quite a bit of discomfort.

I was wondering if it is any way expected that the eyes might get a bit worse before getting better? They're quite sensitive and itchy at the moment and only really the Murine drops are relieving it at all. To be honest, I'm dreading taking the gel tonight if the effect it had on the eyes last night is anything to go by!

One more thing, when I used the gel last night - and the other drops today - I can literally taste it in my mouth afterward?? I have never gotten that before - something I put on my eyes actually leaving a taste in my mouth?! :(

Any thoughts, advice or otherwise?? Starting to worry at this stage as I'm off on holidays tomorrow week and the eyes are quite sensitive to light at the moment.

Screw it - I'm ditching the horrible gel and going old school: Cold teabags for the win!! :o

Make sure you're not using products like Murine after their use by date as they are sterile and will do more harm than good when out of date.

Hmm, just noticed it says 'Do not refrigerate or freeze' and I've been keeping it in the fridge this whole time!! :(

I do believe there is some connection between the eyes and the throat so I wouldn't be too worried about the taste thing.

Is it possible to return to the laser clinic to discuss? Surely the surgery is going to be even slightly to blame here. Did you have these symptoms prior to the surgery and to the same degree?

I might do just that. I've always had the dry eyes and the Eye doc didn't seem to think it was as a result of the lazer surgery. Although I have had sporadic discomfort here and there since I got it done.

Anyway, eyes don't look a whole lot better this morning - puffyness gone down a bit maybe - but they do feel a bit better. Good ol teabags!
