my sisters macbook was left on standby with a full battery for about two months- now she says the battery is completely dead, won't hold a second of charge. Is this typical of having a laptop no standby for long periodes?

No. Batteries expire from use, charging and discharging again and a again. A single slow discharge from being on standby shouldn't have any effect on the battery.

You can check the health of the battery in system info or whatever it is called on a Mac. Should show how many cycles it has done and what the capacity is compared to the new capacity.
