NCT and Wing Mirrors

I have my NCT Monday and last night some yob broke the passenger side mirror off my 2006 Yaris. Everything else ok with it glass, casing and the electrics. My uncle said he thinks it might need a new plate which I hear can be expensive.

Anyway a friend who knows about cars just screwed it back in place and put some black tape on it and you would not know there is anything wrong with it except you cannot turn the mirror in. -That a huge pain as cannot put it through the car wash now so have to wash it myself

I am just wondering if they can fail you on the NCT for this. I know NCT can be a hit and miss affair but generally is this a big problem. Had it service a month ago and it is perfect and has very low milage so it should pass.

    Thanks

I'm afraid 'mirror not adjustable' is a failure.....

Rear View Mirror(s), Internal and External where fitted by the vehicle manufacturer as original equipment

    Reasons for Failure....

    1. Missing.
    2. Reflecting surface deteriorated or broken so as to impair the driver’s view.
    3. Head or mounting loose.
    4. Mirror not adjustable

Section 27, Page 11 of the current NCT Manual.....

Someone did this to my car not so long ago. There's times I really want to install those flamethrowers you get on cars in South Africa....

When you say you can't turn the mirror in do you mean you can't adjust the mirror or fold the body of the mirror into the car? From the way I'm reading the handbook as long as you can adjust the actual mirror part so as to get the correct viewing angle your ok? I could be wrong here because I'm no mechanic but I'm sure someone will advise you better.

Would a cracked glass mirror on the drivers side fail an NCT? Just curious as I sold my car lately with one

I can adjust the mirror itself i.e can move glass up and down to see the road from any angle. It the mirror body itself won't fold into the car

The mirror is electronic so can be controlled from inside car.

    So that should be ok

The mirror is adjustable but the case itself is not - in that it cannot be folded into side of car. Surely that is not a failing offence.

If it is pretty disgraceful. As long as it is secure and you can adjust the mirror/glass itself surely that is what is important.

I couldn't tell you to be honest. From the way I'm reading it it sounds ok but I'm sure one of the folks that know more about the NCT can tell you.

Yeah you'll be grand, I nctd the mothers old car exactly as you described and it was grand,

    As long as its secure.

I think it will pass. If they ask any questions tell them what happened and that it works 100% and you're waiting on a new one coming.

Yep my friend screwed in into place and put some black tape as extra security. You would not notice it at all.

Thanks for information. I just cannot afford over €300 for new plate or whatever is needed.

I am going to sell it, well hope to, after it hopefully passes the NCT. I'll miss my car but don't use it as much anymore so costing me more to keep it parked up.

It really depends how bad. A single crack is ok, but if it is like a spiders web, then it is a fail.

I got a replacement mirror for an 06 yaris for €40 in a scrapyard. Right colour and all
