Where to buy bikes

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could advise us?

My husband and I have moved to Dublin for the year from South Africa and we are looking to buy some bikes for getting around town.

We are not looking to spend a great deal, probably around 70 Euros, would we get some bikes for this price? Second hand would be fine.

Where should we start our search? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Judy

For that price, be careful not to buy stolen bikes. However, the Garda Auction, held monthly in Kildare, would be a good start.

    Here's this month's one http://www.buyandsell.ie/business-opportunities-2/auctions/kildare/bicycle-auction-3

You could ask merlinauctions.ie when the next one will be - probably the same time in September.

Second hand is your best bet and even then you'd have to up your budget a bit. At around 150-200eur you could get a basic decent bike on adverts.ie or donedeal.ie that won't end up in frustration. Also the ads section in this forum has something on the cheaper end from time to time. Also get good u-locks, bike theft is big here.

Welcome and sorry about the weather:)

Rothar (Irish for bike) would be a good stating point for a decent secondhand bike and you'll be helping a good cause

Thanks everyone for the prompt replies, will look into all the suggestions.

Bake dankie Rich, we are really looking forward to our time here in Dublin.

I have another question, and I realise it might not be straight forward to answer but we were wondering what distance is manageable to cycle each day as we are also looking for a place to stay that is in cycling distance to ucd smurfit where my husband will be studying. We are both active people and quite fit, running often but not really cycling so we are not sure about distances. How long would it take to cycle 5kms at a moderate pace, or what is the furthest km's we should be from the college? I know this is very difficult to answer but any advice would be greatly appreciated

    Many thanks

Depends more on time of day and traffic than anything else. I'm regularly out to UCD from Ballyboden in the evenings and it takes about 15-20 mins for the 8k trip. It would be longer at rush hour, and also if you were coming across the city rather than from somewhere where you didn't have to cross the city. Certainly anything in a 10k radius should be no hardship, even on the dark, wet and windy days on a cheap bike.

15 miles takes me around an hour, but I'm a wimp. A nice distance would be (depending on your budget) Booterstown/Ballsbridge or Harold's Cross, say.

I cycle 9k eachway everyday to ucd belfield, it's very easy, takes me 25mins at rush hour and I'm no fitness queen.
Be aware that Smurfit is actually based in Blackrock, not Belfield, and that places to stay close to Blackrock are generally quite pricey as it's a wealthy area.
In answer to your question, cycling 5k should take approx 15mins and you wont break a sweat, Dublin isn't very hilly.
    Just windy.
    And rainy.

This guy has a good selection of older cheaper bikes for around €150 to €250.
It says on his website that he will buy the bike back for 50% of the purchase price after 1 year.
