    Hi,

Just had an email in from one of the places where I get film and supplies. They have become more and more expensive over the past few years, but yesterday's email was a bit of a shock.

Oh yes, and it's in German. My bolding...

    Sehr geehrter aidanic,

PS: Haben Sie schon unseren neuen Online-Shop besucht? Sie finden ihn unter der gewohnten Adresse (www.phototec.de), aber mit viel mehr Artikeln zu den gewohnt günstigen Preisen.

    Ihr Team von PHOTOTEC

The bold bit reads that Fuji prices will increase across the board by 20%, while the Kodak average price rise will be 10%.

    Right now, Phototec charge €4.66 for Fuji Acros 100 35mm/36exp. Macodirect €4.60, 7daysshop £4.99, Mailshots £4.64 and thephotoshop.ie €4.83.

    Crap!

The thing is, if film doubles in price I'm still going to buy it.

a Roll of Fuji pro 400 here in Aus is about $17 (E14??)

a roll of 120 kodak Portra is about $9.90 (about E7.50?) and Fuji Astia is about $17 for 12 frames.

On average, every shot I take on my Bronica costs me about $2.50 with the cost of film and developing. I scan all my own stuff to keep the costs manageable.

I don't really use my digital kit anymore unless its for paid work.

yeah it's like cigarette smoking or heroin addiction. Putting up the price isn't going to have any effect, we'll just have to mug more old ladies* to feed the habit.

When people say "film makes you slow down and think" it will no longer be because you only have 36, 12 or whatever number of exposures... it's because it's getting so damn feckin expensive.

I used to buy plenty and always have a healthy stock... in the last 6 months I've only being buying at the last minute when stocks have dried up because the prices are just getting crazy.

I bit the bullet earlier this week and ordered 30 rolls of 120 from ThePhotoShop.ie... will keep me tipping over for the next year or so.

I was lucky the past 15 months earning really good money over here so the price didn't really affect me at all. I've just changed jobs and taken a 43% paycut and the reality of the expense is starting to come into my mind.

It is true though, at $2.50 a shot it made me think a lot more about what I was shooting. On the positive side I'd get maybe 9 to 11 shots I was really happy with from a roll of 120.

i think it was costing me €0.80 a shot shooting HP5, 6x6 format, last time i checked.

I said to the other half the other day...

"I just dropped close to €140 on 30 rolls of (120) film... but, if out of those 30 rolls, I get even 5-6 special photos then it'll be worth every penny"

Used well, the film will be good value.
