Have been out of work 3 years now and its getting me down.
I'm originally from the uk,I did my gcse at 16 and went on to do an apprenticeship In painting and decorating,Its a job I hate and at 16 was unsure what i wanted to do and was pressurised into picking something quick as my dad wanted me out earning money.
I attended a Jobs club here and got my cv done out but as I have only done painting the last 12 years I am struggling to even get an interview.
I have thought about going to Australia for a year and see how i get on,but i am married with 2 kids and the thought of leaving them is killing me.I have thought about going back to the uk for work but again leaving the kids etc, also we have debts here and mortgage that we just can't abandon.
I would like to go back to learn something new but i just don't know what and where to look,I live in laois so there is not a great selection.I am all out of ideas.
At the age of 28 i never thought i'd be in this situation and letting my family down.:(

we have debts here and mortgage that we just can abandon.

Please don't do that. We - the people you are asking for advice - will end up paying your mortgage.

Have you learnt any new skills or gone on any training over the past three years?

It's all about the training really.
You need to retrain someone and find a new career for yourself.
It'll probably involve a time commitment from you.
Is there any FAS training nearby, perhaps you can do some short courses in computers (maintenance or similiar)/welding/bookkeeping etc to see if you have any interest in anything in those lines of careers.
Then perhaps you can look into doing something distance wise.
Look at Oscail.ie , Hibernia college also have some distance stuff and a number of the IT's and Universities have part time or distance courses. That is if you cannot commit to something full time.

Have you looked at letting your house out and moving en masse to the UK?

Yeah that's been considered but rent in our area and our house are only fetching €500 monthly our mortgage is €1140 a month.

I appreciate where you're coming from but you've got to put your family first. And if a country has nothing to offer....

Still, OP...if you're committed to Ireland and have all the time in the world to rip it up and start again then you'll want to re-train seriously in a skill which the country has a shortage of not only now but in future years. I'd suggest you research this million euro question because if probably doesn't have an easy answer. Of the top of my head I'd say something along the lines of healthcare, nursing...that type of thing. But welding? Bookkeeping? No chance...
