    Pity to see Matt retire.
I'm fortunate enough to know Matt and the man has a knowledge and a grasp of the farming sector like nobody I've ever met.

The average IFJ editor lasts about 20yrs and can be such an influetial person.
I hope whoever steps into his shoes is up to it because as much as we all like to give out, the IFJ is a very good newspaper.

Was there a suspicion that Justin was a bit hacked off that he didnt get the Editor job, and spat the dummy?

Ah God no!! Young blood is what's needed. Although the content is good, I think it could do with a bit of modernisation and facelift IMO. Perhaps even a different layout?

It would be no harm also to have a person that was a bit more of a newspaper editor, they needn't necessarily be an agricultural expert. Leave that to the 'Journalists' (if you could call them that). The standard of writing in the IFJ is appalling. Poor turn of phrase, spelling, punctuation etc.

That Mooney guy is an example in point... I started reading the article he wrote this week about slatted tanks, and had to stop a few sentences in. What a load of tripe. Where was the editor here?

It's a national newspaper...what am I saying? International really what with being on the net. It needs to get the basics right. Just because it attracts a more specific readership shouldn't mean setting itself lower editorial standards than say the Irish Independent/ Time etc..... rant over.

It could turn out like The Sunday Independent and go to crap. I remember when the Sunday Independent was a decent paper and how it's just a collection of different peoples opinions. It went from a Newspaper to a Viewspaper.

I'd agree with you Whelan1, John Shirley would be a very good candidate for the editor position.

I know little or nothing about tillage, but love reading Gerard Potterton's articles too. If only more of the articles were as interesting as his. A story. With a beginning, a middle and an end. That''s another thing that bugs me. There is never any conclusion to any of the articles.

Yep I would agree. It's an Absolut rag of a paper. It should change to a red top. Full of populists over dramatic headlines. I stopped reading it all together but saw the headlines in the inlaws the last 2 weeks. Anyway my rant over.

Were the negative comments not aimed at the Sunday Indo?

    I think he's talking about me! :D

Yes Farmer's Journal is the best Irish farming publication we have. Yes the articles can be informative.

Could it be improved on? Yes. Have I said anything that wasn't true? No.

I suppose little will change until it gets some competition. But in fairness that would be a near impossible job. They have every angle covered and a mass of contacts. I've often thought about it.....
