Which hardware do you want to use? Visit the manufacturer's website and check for certified Macs, pick the one with the highest specs and your "best suited" Mac.

down the line ill be eitheir using pro tools with an mbox soundcard or sound forge pro which i believe is being released for mac soon. its tricky to decide which one to go for i know what range the macbook pro suits what i want to do best just the way apple do it is i cant upgrade the components the way i want and have a 13" screen i have to dish out close to €3000 instead

Is there any particular reason it has to be a Mac? A PC would work out much cheaper, be upgradable, and would run the software just as well if not better.

It's going to heavily depend on hardware. I'm using a MBP i5 4GB RAM but using an maudio profire 2626. I've never had any major issues. That's using 11 channels at once and mixing on the fly. If you don't need it portable, get a nice decent sized screen. I need portability but have the mac connected to a dedicated 52" monitor.
