Pretty spot on in my opinion, though too many (5) Radiohead albums in there, I'd only rate 3 of theirs; Kid A, Amnesiac and Ok Computer.

The Radiohead thing is no surprise, it's Pitchfork after all. Radiohead can't do any wrong in their eyes.

Cheers, will see what I make of the list.

Edit: Just realised it's the readers of Pitchfork. Ah well, monkey see, monkey do!

Its a compilation of pitchfork readers fav albums and as usual in these polls what the majority of people like gets to be top..means nothing really but I would have arcade fire funneral top and obviously I would rate sufjan stevens above kanye west in any given poll of anything.
Curiously no menomena albums made the list

Yeah, it has all my favourites in there, though not even close to the order I'd make em. But still, a pretty good list. I'd say I've listened to over 60% of the stuff there, and closer to 80-90% of the artists. There's been a ton of great stuff over the last 15 years!

Though I will say, while I like the first Girls album, 'Father, Son and Holy Ghost' is awful stuff. I had it on in the car and my girlfriend mentioned that it sounded like Chinese Karaoke (she's from Hong Kong), which made me laugh as it's a pretty spot on description. So that shouldn't be anywhere in that list, least of all above something like Grandaddy's 'The Sophtware Slump'.

Decent list overall. Good to see Fevers and Mirrors as the Bright Eyes representative, my favourite of his by a mile. No Death Cab is surprising but at least The Postal Service made it.

Some rubbish in there too, as expected, Kanye and The XX in particular. Don't rate Vampire Weekend at all either.

Nah! Overhyped? Definitely, but their first album was really good. Which surprised me, as I was put off by all the media talk at the time.

Glad to see My Morning Jacket get a few entries.

Interesting how little variety there is in the country by country rankings. I would have expected it to vary enormously, but practically every country's list is the exact same.

    Hipsters going to be hip!

Not really, pretty much all the albums that made the top 20 have attracted unanimous critical acclaim.

Not really, wouldn't the most well known and respected "indie" artists (or hip hop) be mostly from US, UK, Canada and some European countries and be equally popular at home and abroad,so these would feature highly in a Argentinean or Russians list as much as an Americans, for instance I'm Irish but apart from Ash I wouldn't include any other Irish groups in the top 200 just because I am. I'm not French but like Air as much as anyone in France etc.

These polls are meaningless, they only provide a talking point for websters-the definition of what is indie is so far removed from what it originally meant as to being irrelevant. All the freetards downloading millions of tracks without bothering to listen to half the album, let alone going to small gigs in obscure venues where music is really at. Indie is small labels releasing local bands not stuff like radiohead, who are starting to resemble Pink Floyd at their worst corporate excess. Pitchfork has ended up like the NME mid 90's-irrelevant.
Any publication that needs to rely on polls has lost it

I have to say I don't have too many qualms with that list. Without ever reading Pitchfork I seem to share a very similar view on what's worth listening to and what's not.

I'd say only 1 or 2 of my top 20 albums of the past 15 years aren't in that list.

Obviously? I'm getting the impression you haven't even listened to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

It's funny to see how quick people are to shout 'hipster' when they don't see their own favorites on top. Pitchfork have some stupid reviewers but it does get it right usually. Either way it's a poll and who really takes top-whatever album lists that seriously at the end of the day? Think Amnesiac scored too high on the list though, it's one of my favourite Radiohead albums but it's a bit disjointed. Same with The XX who take a decent sound and drone it on for the entire album.

Not many surprises overall, for anyone who regularly visits Pitchfork. The results pretty much line up with their writer's end of year polls.

I supposes that's to be expected. It's voted for by their readers, who obviously feel their music tastes are in tune with the reviewers.

You would be correct but this being an alt/indie forum that should not be too much of surprise.

Maybe time for our own top 20 of alt/indie albums,,same time period?

That's an interesting idea actually. I suppose in boards.ie's case it would have to be 1998-2011, so no OK computer.

98 being the year boards came online I presume..Could be a good idea alrite..we let run for a month then compile all the top 20's and then using sophisticated algorithms and weighting systems(which i wont provide!) we see what comes top !
Have to alt/indie typish albums obviously.

I hate when people feel like they have to confine to a type of music. If you did listen for yourself though instead of basing him on his reputation you'd find a rather talented producer and musician. Open your mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,883 ✭✭✭smokedeels

I like most of those albums, albeit in a different order.

I like the idea of a Boards lifetime alt/indie poll.

And Kanye can be in it too if Kanye wants to be. One of the mods is quite a fan I think.

Would Pitchfok's primary readership be America?

It's the only reason I can see not to have Richard Hawley in there....

Someone set up the 98-11 Boards Lifetime Albums Memorial List then!

I want to get working on mine.

Everybody contribute a top 20 and then they get weighted from 20 to 1?
