Can't identify network help! no internet

    Hi all,

Having a problem with my laptop. It connects to WIFI, but will not connect to internet. In network centre it shows that pc to wifi is ok but wifi to internet "cannot identify network".
I have tried various different setting changes but to no available. Touchpad and android phone all have no issue with connecting and strangely when I bring laptop to friends house it connects no problem.
Having googled it this seems to be a common problem with no one easy fix.

I am looking for anything that I can try within my limited ability before bringing it in to a repair workshop. From experience of other issues there is always some genius out there willing to help, so hopefully I can fix it with your help.

    Thanks.................

If it connects at your friend's house you don't need a 'repair workshop'

Open a command prompt (start-->run, type cmd, press enter), type
    ipconfig /all

    and

    ping www.boards.ie

then copy/paste the results back here

if ipconfig says you have an ip then try these

try this in case it's DNS

    ping 8.8.8.8

    this may give more info

    route print

    Thanks for replies.

As I have to be at home to do this I can't do your suggestions until tomorrow so I'll post results back then
Really appreciate your help so it'd be great if you can keep an eye on this thread.

    Cheers

    Hi all,

Sorry for delay. Took me a while to get the details and go to where I had a connection to put it all together. Not sure what it means so hopefully it will be able to give you some insight as to my problem.

    Thanks

192.168.1.135 is very high for dhcp, I think you may have a static ip address. Static ip addresses have a ip address and a gateway, and gateways at home often can be 192.168.1.254 which you have possibly set, or 192.168.1.254.

Try changing your settings to getting your ip address automatically.

Thanks for quick response. I'll try this later and post my results. Would love to have a few hours to try and figure it out but away from house again so please bear with me.

Thanks for your help and patience

192.168.1.135 = your address - doesn't matter what it is as long as it's unique

    192.168.1.254 = wireless router address ( eircom / netopia use this )

at this stage I'd start checking the wireless box

turn it off for 30 or so seconds if you haven't already done so - check the phone line or TV cable aren't loose
    - worth doing this every few months regardless

    ping 192.168.1.254

then connect into it - depends on the model but usually you just open a web bowser and see if any messages /status

    http://192.168.1.254

which brand / model is your access point ?

NB you can also plug your computer directly in to the wifi box with a network cable - unlikely to sort out the problem but worth trying - also some access points won't let you manage setting unless you have a physical connection for security reasons

    Hi.

Tried all of the above but any pings are getting 100% failure notifications.
One thing I forgot to mention that when I use it at friends it says 'Private Network', but at home keeps switching to 'Public Network' even if I change setting to private.
Not sure what's going on. I have done lots of research online but no definitive answers.
Would a complete clean reinstal of Vista work? Already upgraded from SP1 to SP2 but made no difference. Or else upgrade to WIN 7 or 8?

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks.

I'm starting to think this is a firewall issue. You can change your network at home to be recognised as a home network by following this link.

    http://www.home-network-help.com/network-location-type.html

If that works, then your firewall is set to block internet traffic through public networks. Should be easy enough to change .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 91 ✭✭rookie76

I have tried to change to private network, but as soon as it starts 'identifying network' is switches back to public. Should I disable the firewall?

Yeah, disable windows firewall. Do you have any other firewall program installed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 91 ✭✭rookie76

Mcafee total protection anti virus. presume there is a built in firewall. will check it out.

You have an atheros wifi card, one of the older models.

I have had major problems with atheros cards on windows, the driver installed automatically by windows does not work for certain network configurations (wifi N in my case). It may also not work in other situations.

Solution: manually download correct driver (using another pc/laptop), then install it.

Pretty sure this is exactly your problem - housemate had same problem with his laptop. Would work on other networks, but not our home one.

This is an integrated wifi card I think? Laptop? Need to know exact model of your pc/laptop - then go to manufacturers site to get proper driver. Have encountered and fixed this problem on both a laptop (built in wifi) and a pc (pci wifi).

T hanks for suggestion. Gonna try that and will post results tomorrow.
    Hopefully this will fix it.

Hi all. sorry for the long delay in getting back. I've been away and just got the chance to try out the laptop.

Anyway it seems that after updating the network adaptor from hp website the problem is solved.
Amazing. well done and thanks for the solution. I have searched through the internet and no one had suggested this fix, so fair play.

Always had faith in the genius of boards.ie users.

    Cheers....

I've seen McAfee do this many times before. Uninstall or turn off McAfee, Uninstall preferably and then test.

I've fixed many a laptop with your issues and always McAfee causing the issue.
