Can only do whole months. And I hope for your sake you haven't used any toll roads while the tax has been out.

The mechanic might have been using it when he was fixing it...:pac:

As far as I know the law changed. You now have to sign off the car prior to it being off the road and not post it being off the road.

In saying that, the tax office allows you to tax the car in the month or the month after it expires. So if expired at the end of July, you have until the end of this month to tax it, so you're cleared for the weekend

That is great to know. I could end up getting a lift but just in case I don't

Just for peace of mind.... You're 100% clear to drive without question until the end of this month
5Q. How long after my renewal date will I be able to tax my vehicle online?
5A. One month after your renewal date, motor tax arrears will become due on your vehicle. Arrears on this site cannot be paid in isolation - the renewal amount must also be paid. This site facilitates the payment of up to three months arrears, after which time your PIN will become inactive and your motor tax transaction must be completed through your local motor tax office. In such circumstances owners are required to complete form RF100A and forward it to your local motor tax office. Motor Tax Office contact details can be got on our homepage under the link 'Motor Tax Office Details'.

In the case of the first taxing of a new or imported vehicles, arrears will become due at the begining of the month following the month of registration. Up to three months arrears can also be paid online. After this period, the vehicle must be taxed at a motor tax office. It should be noted that a subsequent declaration of non-use for any arrears period paid will not be acceptable for a refund of motor tax.

Woah there! Please don't go giving false legal info.

Yes OP, don't click the link below. It's the Official Irish Motor Tax website with their FAQs. As we all know the State talk a load of ambiguous shight and jargon

    https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/staticContent.do?page=faq

I'll let the OP decide to believe it or not

Also, this is crap too, the law hasn't changed yet, it was a proposal, but hasn't been implemented yet.

I'm fine with that. I knew it was going to be a contentious issue

This'll probably sound silly, but why not tax it today?

Is it possible for the OP to still get fined and points for not having tax? Yes.

Are ya sure about this? False info and all that.

Just tax car now then drive as the car will be shown as taxed just that your waiting on it to be posted/ delivered.

Dont leave it till you have to go into the motor tax office its so slow

I can't find an image online of the renewal form they send you but have a read of it, if you still have it. The statement is very unambiguous

Here's a post from a similar discussion back in 2010.

Theres nothing ambiguous about any of it. You can tax it online up to a month after it expired. You cant drive without tax.

You can leave your car untaxed for 5 months then go in and pay arrears in the tax office. That doesnt allow you to drive untaxed for 5 months. If your stopped the car will be taken off you.

Nothing contentious - just plain and simply not true.

No you cannot get it written off by any Garda, they don't have that authority. What you can do is make a legal declaration that you have not used (driven or parked) the car in a public place (road, carpark, etc) at any time during that month. The Garda only signs the form to prove he witnessed you making the declaration.
Be warned, there are stiff penalties if caught making a false declaration.

The Garda using his/her discretion which they're allowed to do.
You should not assume it's permission to continue driving around untaxed. Just hope it's not the same Garda you want to witness your declaration if you make one, he/she might remember you.
