I'm posting this on behalf of my sister in law who is on the point of bankrupcy having made the ill advised purchase of a used 2 litre petrol Merc(02 CL) a few years back. Anyway she is looking to ditch it ASAP and pick up a second had small petrol engine along the lines of a 3-door Corsa,Fiesta,Aygo etc. She drives 1.5 hrs to work on a motorway. What would the knowledgeable types on here advise her to go for??:)

Fiat Punto 1.2l, from 03 upwards are very reliable. I did five hours driving to cork and back from where I live for 30 euro petrol and had some left over. There not expensive either to fix if something did go wrong with it. Get an 04 for around 1500 euro or less.

You'll need to post up her annual mileage and budget for starters.

No matter what she swaps to she will make huge savings.

Problems with huge mileage is its better to go for a diesel rather than a small petrol id say.

My brother is happy with his 08 2l passat 140bhp. Circa 50mpg in relative comfort with acceptable power. Going from a Merc to a punto for a long daily commute Id probably jump off a cliff!

Exactly, otherwise all the answers will be based on bad starting info and pubtalk. Can't see how someone who is bankrupt from a 02 merc is gonna afford a 08 onwards passat. A punto with a 6th gear could well be the best answer to the original question, if only because most small engine petrols suck at 3hours motorway every day.
