1366x768 rant

Its the bane of my life :D Looking for a middle of the road laptop but 99% of laptops seems to have these panels at the minute.

4 years ago I had an XPS M1530 and you could get 1440*900, 1680*1050 even 1920*1200!

Is there a decent middle of the road machine with a 1600*900 panel or better? Or will I have to put up with XGA vertical resolution that I had on my CRT monitor 15 years ago if I want to spend less than a grand?

Depends on screen size a lot...

I feel your pain, 1366x768 on a 15" screen is crap. The Samsung Series 7 Chronos has a 1600x900 resolution (I have this laptop and the screen is great). I think some Lenovos have 1600x900 or at least the option to upgrade them to it, same with Asus. Some laptops give you the option of 1080p but on a laptop I think that is too high, especially on a 15.6" screen.

Yeah 1600*900 is the standard on 17" machines it seems but not sure if I would like to carry one around

I had 1366*768 on a HP DM1z which has an 11.6" screen and that was a nice resolution for that panel. Its horrific on 15" alright! I'll look into the samsungs thanks

16x9 just stinks... I had some trouble finding a 16x10 (1920x1200) monitor recently.

I suspect the content industry behind this. Or maybe some torrenteers complaing about these fugly black bars at the top and bottom of their pirated TV shows? :D

Yeah, on a screen that size it suits perfectly, 14"+ screen with a resolution like that is a joke.

Ah, the good old days of the 16:10 aspect ratio. I do miss that 120 extra pixels on my 2 24" monitors. :( The glossy screen is another trend I hate. Luckily, Samsung have scrapped them on their laptops and a lot of Asus laptop screens are matte. Apple's screen on the new 13" MacBook Air is still glossy but a lot less reflective which hopefully will catch on if things don't go back to matte.

Seen the new toshiba ultrabook with the cinematic widescreen display? When I work tomorrow I'll make a note of the model and resolution and report back.

How to make an Ultrbook as bulky as a 17" laptop? Toshiba Satellite U845W :D

Dude, why is there black bars at the left and the right of my screen when I watch a TV show?

    To maintain aspect ratio.

Had they not centered the keyboard, there would be enough space for a cup holder and a popcorn tray... :D

I recently bought a Lenovo G570 with Radeon HD 6370M Graphics. Is it possible to upgrade the resolution? The Win 7 Screen Resolution adjuster only goes as far as 1366X768.

Only if you swap the LCD screen for a suitable replacement with a bigger resolution.

As a workaround, you can change the DPI settings to 80 or 90%. You'll have to choose a custom value as 100% is the minimum setting available for the slider.

How to Change the Display DPI Size in Windows 7

(Go to paragraph 6 for custom DPI settings.)

However, this does not work for Games and certain programs which override the Windows DPI settings.

It wouldn't be so bad if the displays were any good but it's almost guaranteed that a 15.6" laptop with a 1366x768 display will be washed out, dull and overly glossy to make it appear "vibrant".

I was in the same predicament as you about three months ago and settled for an XPS 15 with the 1080P B+RG LED screen. The screen and the sound quality of the XPS 15 probably surpass most TVs.

Thank's Torqay but I followed the instructions and it wont let me put in a custom value... say I put 90% in the drop down box and a second later it changes itself back to 100%.

I'm pretty sure the old registry "hack" works for Windows 7 as well.

And here's the usual warning: Do this at your peril. ;)
