Commented on an oldish thread but wasn't getting any reply but anyway, I'm looking to get an A4 Avant (B6) and I'm currently trying to figure out which engine. I wouldn't mind a 1.8T petrol as it will be a second car as we have a diesel already. This would be my car with room for the bobba and bobba equipment when needed. I wouldn't do the mileage for a diesel but wouldn't rule it out.
However I'd like to know, what are the 1.6s like? Are they like a dead duck when driving? I presume there's no way of tuning them anyway to make them livelier?

Also where the hell are all the 1.8T Avants! This country really has the horn for diesels.:P

I had a '97 A4 1.8T and loved it. After swapping it for a 156 in 2000, I was looking again in early 2002 and thought a B6 1.8T would be a no-brainer. I drove it in Dublin and thought it would be just a formality before placing my order.
I didn't like it, as I found it surprisingly flat in its power delivery. I was a bit nonplussed as to what to buy after that and it took me a while to consider a diesel. I drove the 1.9 TDI 130 bhp and loved it, so I ordered one and I still have it, even though my wife now drives it.
Around that time, I met a friend who had just bought a B6 1.6. He said he had made the biggest mistake as he bought it without a test drive and found it absolutely gutless.
The 1.8T originally had 150 bhp, but later versions were upped to 180 bhp, so one of those might be a better bet.
For me, the torque of the PD engine wins all the way.

You will get alot more petrol A4 for your money second hand than you will a diesel one.

B7 A4 1.8t had 163bhp and never felt lacking in pace, 1.6 will be sufficent around town but on the open road it will totally be devoid of any sort of life.

The 1.6 is an insult to anything with supposedly a premium badge. August Horch would spin in his grave if he knew about it!
The 163bhp might be quite good. Personally I never liked the 1.9 PD engines, the power delivery sequence is foot down -> nothing...nothing...nothing...everything+smoke...nothing+noise+smoke...nothing+noise...
Try look for a 2.5 TDi quattro, they're not too bad.

I have a 1.9 tdi avant. If I had my buying opportunity back again, I'd have gotten a 130bhp quattro, and remapped it. Yes the power delivery is odd with the TDI engine if you are expecting similar outputs to a petrol engine.
What I noticed is that at least for the map that's on my "105bhp" engine, (it's insured as the 130 so it's all above board) I have a flat power curve from 1800 rpm through about 4200 rpm. The 130 engine has more headroom, and a proper remap would give a flat power curve from 1800 through 4700 rpm. A preoper remapper would be able to tune the smoke out without issues, and give a properly responsive engine.

Petrol engines tend to have fairly flat torque curves, which means a peaky power curve at higher rpms. It's possible to map a diesel engine to give this 'feel' but it's not as useful as a decent wedge of torque at 2000 rpm is for overtaking without having to drop a gear.

The 1.6 is gutless, and the 1.8T would generally have to be worked to get the best from it when compared to the tdi engines. There's a reason why the smaller petrols are such 'value'.

The 2.5tdi is a good choice if you can get the 180bhp version. Get a good mechanic to make sure that there isn't camshaft lobe wear on the 2.5tdi, it's a known possibility if the engine was driven too long at low rpms, as there was oil delivery issues to the camshafts.
