    I'd take a 730d for sure.

I would have a nice 520-525d M-sport personally, wouldn't rule out a 170bhp A6 though if it was within my budget

That BMW730 is a beautiful machine but would cost a fortune to run:(

Anyone any experience on the Alfa159: looks good and seems well priced.

Wouldn't trust the Alfa auto, but manual would be good.

I'd be looking at BMW 520d or Audi A6.

Should be able to get a high spec example of each for that money.

Mid 08 or later would be ideal for cheaper tax.

Might have to go a bit over the 14k but the tax savings in 1st 3 years would cover this.

Early 7-series were a bit plagued with electrical issues. Auto A6's aren't all that bullet proof either.
If its driving entertainment you're after, you could go for something like this:

Lower end of your budget, so makes up a bit for non-diesel! Beats the pants of the A4 and 3-Series 4 pot offerings!

06 of that 7 series is not early, its approx 4 years into into the life of the model. If its straight, then its a heck of a deal IMO and would sure beat sitting in a 159 or a volvo s40 :P

Someone on bmw-driver.net might know its history.

Also, servicing compared to a 520/525/530d surely wouldn't be much more of a push for the OP, especially for as you could probably get it for 12k flat which is 2-3k below budget so stick the rest in the credit union for servicing.

    Simples

    S320???

Again, put the left overs towards running costs. To be fair, I think the facelifted version is better than this one, but only petrols fall into the budget

when you think you would probably get the car for 12k, its 6 years old and at 12k would probably be around 10% of the original purchase price! That S class ia another beauty GavMan, the advantage i find the the 7 v the S though is that the 7 isnt in top tax bracket and also for insurance (from what I have found anyway) pretty much all companies quote on up to 3L and you have lots of choice, far less when over the 3L engine size... just checked the 3.2L diesel engine in the S class only puts out 197bhp!!! the 730d puts out 228bhp and 520nm of torque!

    That's a joke, right?

Which part? It's comfortable and well spec'd! It is better to drive than any A4, and all 4-pot 3-series.
5-series or E-Class would offer more in the comfort area, but a 04 7-series that was suggested or an auto 159 wouldn't be options that I'd have any faith in not having to spend more money on in the future. I'd be looking at a clean E38 from the UK instead.

It's a 2.3 petrol turbo for doing 30k a year! Without even considering petrol prices it'd be an absolute minimum of 2k a year extra in petrol, not to mind the potential saving off 700 odd euro a year in tax.

Only thing I would say is upgrade the rims on that 7er. They dont really suit it.

You make a heck of a case, Idbatterim. I'd trade in my Alfa 147 on it only I don't need the daysul myself. Only do 8k km per year
