Bytes - at the Odessa Roof Bar and Terrace, 13 Dame Court, Dublin 2
    Sunday 26th August 2012
    18.00 - 1.00am

What’s wrong? Help is on the way. Everything will be all right. You are in our hands. We are here to protect you. You have somewhere to go. You have somewhere to go. Blessings of the state, blessings of the masses, Bytes is a relaxed Sunday evening social get-together combining quality electronix, vintage gaming and cult science fiction films in the comfortable and pleasant surroundings of the Odessa penthouse bar and terrace.

Each Bytes outing will commence with a full play of a classic electronix album as chosen by the combined, yet limited, brain matter of the committee. For our first outing we have selected the legendary Black Dog Productions’ seminal album Bytes from 1993. Considered by many as one of the defining releases of the Artificial Intelligence series from Warp Records, this premier collection of zeroes and ones never fails to inspire.

After that aural treat, we will lower the IQ level a couple of notches, where resident honorary scouse Paul Chillage will be joined by his Manchester nemesis, Steve Cross to commence friendly battle for the evening. Selecting the finest electronic transmissions from across the decades. Closing out our first night will be Karl McGrath (formerly of Droid and Slug from Power FM) doing a rare DJ set. Now recording as Zvuku, Karl brings the noise and recently supported Tim Hecker at his sell out-gig in the Unitarian Church. Amen.

Our vintage gaming area will be presided over by our resident Gamesmaster, Dublin’s own stargazer, Mr. Jay Kelly aka Safetyboy. First in our series of challenges will feature Bomb Jack, the classic platformer from 1984. In it our hero travels the world’s top tourist sites jumping and gliding his way to collecting rather than dropping all the bombs. Top score on the night wins a pair of Bytes for two in the restaurant. Explosive.

Getting loaded up on the VHS player will be George Lucas’ “THX 1138” from 1971. Set in the 25th century, the story centers around a man and a woman who rebel against their rigidly controlled society, as are you seeing as it’s a Sunday. Lucas’ first feature is highly regarded and has been sampled endlessly by the electronic music community, but you knew that because you are a true believer.

If at any time you feel you are not properly sedated, call to our well stocked bar immediately and exchange your credits for the following vintage-priced liquid refreshments. Failure to do so may result in prosecution for criminal fun evasion and your game will be over.

    Draught Guinness/Heineken @ €3.50
Cocktails @ €5: Cosmopolitan, Classic Margarita, Long Island Ice Tea, Espresso Martini
Odessa Ginger Mojito, Mojito, Sparkling Mojito Elderflower and Apple Collins, Bellini

    SCI FI - THX1138
    GAMING - BOMB JACK
ELECTRONIX - PAUL CHILLAGE / STEVE CROSS / KARL MCGRATH
