New students- when do we get our student card/tcd email

I got my introductory letter from the provost and I student number, but I am still unsure as to when I receive my student card and my tcd email etc. I consider these steps to be fundamental elements in becoming a TCD student. I didn't grind out 560 points to be kept in limbo about becoming a genuine student of this fine academic establishment. I would like to know when I'm in in, as in in.

After you register during Freshers week. Mid-september in other words.

I would suggest that you wait until registration (which is when these things are generally resolved in third level institutions, by the way) before implying that Trinity has somehow left you in the dark about a bridge you quite frankly won't have to cross for another month.

Hold your horses there, the deadline for accepting offers hasn't even passed yet! Registration will be done online this year, so chances are you'll get the student email earlier than previous years. But you'll probably get the student card during Freshers Week.

If you're already complaining about "being kept in limbo" when you only became a student here 2 days ago, you're going to have a fun four years :P

Oh Christ, the entitlement has already begun with this one...

You'll become a genuine student once you've registered as a genuine student.

Once you register - get your little photo taken (it will haunt you for at least two years so be at your worst) and pay any cash over if needed.
Then you're able to complain about the card swipes not working, photocopying facilities, slow labs, bad food / expensive food, people eating food in labs, people talking in labs / lectures, various cats, and how normal it all is.

Aww, poor you. And after all that grinding out points too! You should get on to Student Records, they'll surely make an exception and give it to you straight away. After all, nobody else had to grind out a certain number of CAO points to get their course, did they?

From one of your previous posts ...

"I have been drinking since I started in college at 18 and I am now 25."

Go and troll somewhere else .

Do we actually end up using the TCD email accounts that often, or is it just an eye-candy?

Yes, all official correspondence from lecturers, admin etc. will be directed at the tcd email address.

I still use mine that I've had since 2005

How is the fact you got 560 points relevant to this?

It's not. He's a dual account troll, who will be leaving us now.

Sorry to hijack this thread, I just got accepted too and this question might sound a little odd, but do people usually take notes on their laptops or on paper? Any tips on starting college would be great too :)

People tend to take notes on paper and procrastinate on laptops. There are exceptions though.

As a Science student I (and everyone else) took notes on paper, but sitting in on my girlfriend's law class, most of them used laptops

I do English, which I use a laptop for, and Maths, which I use a good old pen and paper. Some people use iPads or tablets in Maths, and lots of people in English use an A4 pad, or a post it, or their arm... It's whatever works for you :) The advantage of doing things on a laptop is that it can't get lost or torn, it's all there and easy to find. The disadvantage is Facebook.

It's personal preference really; I'm a slow writer and a horrific speller, any notes I take during lectures are unreadable so I'm laptop all the way, but most people in my course (science) prefer to write notes. Laptops can be awkward, it's best to have a small one with a good battery because most lecture halls don't have plugs, you also need to have some self control so you don't spend every lecture on facebook.
A lot of people start of the year bringing in laptops then switch to a notebook when the novelty wears off. I'd say try out both and see what works best for you.

Thanks everyone! I'm doing psychology so I'd say there'll be a lot of writing involved.. I really like highlighting and using colourful pens so I might stick to paper, I'm such a kid haha :D

Sigmund Freud did not use a laptop....he probably just remembered where he put his notes come exam time. Same goes for every discipline / area of study.
Having someone in the class record lectures discreetly (and with permission) is a godsend though.

I take notes on paper (partially because I'm old-fashioned, partially because I find it easier to pay attention without a laptop screen in front of me) but I use my laptop when I'm studying/writing essays.

The big lecture halls don't have many (any?) sockets, and a lot of the classrooms (for tutorials) only have one or two, so you need to consider that too.

I'm in TSM languages and only about a quarter of my class use laptops. It's really down to personal preference, you won't look odd either way, so don't worry!

If you plan on using your laptop for notes, also bring in a pen and paper for backup. A good few lectures, in engineering anyway, have a strict "no laptops allowed" policy. Not sure what it might be like for psychology.

Oh, you will be using it! A lot!

My inbox tells me I currently have 2,797 emails in my inbox (that's in under three years). And when you consider that most of these will have been sent on weekdays between September and May, that's a lot of emails a day during term-time :p

    FYI

Just spoke with someone in student fee section of treasurers office and ..... fees for new undergrads are due 1st of Sept. He said there's a little 'wiggle room' to accommodate transfers etc and because of the new system. But basically if you are a new undergrad ... pay asap!!

You can pay online or via electronic fund transfer from your bank - however as it will take a few days to process, you really need to be doing it today.

I also asked about the SUSI sponsorship. You have to click on finance tab in mytcd.ie and enter details under sponsorship. Make sure to enter your SUSI application number, 100% and then complete the entry. It takes a while to update your fee payment form then.

THEN you will only need to pay the €85 (gym fee and levy) today. And if the SUSI application is unsuccessful TCD will issue a new invoice which you will have to pay. And there is no 'late payment fee' if this happens.

    Hope this helps

About the fees, I updated my.tcd.ie to say that I'm eligible for government-paid fees but it hasn't updated in the My Finances tab? I am keen to pay soon.
It's a little off topic but any feedback would be great.
