gearbox feel after clutch and DMF relpacement on 07 passat 1.9D

    Hi All,

I had a clutch fail on me without signs of wear. No warning, clutch dropped to the floor when I tried to start her. I pulled the clutch out by hand, and tried to start again, but the clutch felt softer, like there was not bite. The gearbox was stuck in first, so when i tried to start her she just jurked forward.
Rang garage, garage recovery guy with force got the gear leaver into neutral. managed to force the car into gear, and drove her up on the recovery trailer.
Garage dropped the gearbox to investigate and informed that the clutch was worn. As it was a fairly new purchase & still in warrantee, we came to an arrangement and I had the cluch and DMF replaced.

Now that I have gotton it back, the gears feel a bit odd. Before they were smooth and crisp when I was going up the gears. Now (especially when trying to find third) it's not smooth, and it's like it doesn't go all the way up in 3rd.

I'm wondering if there is damage to the gearbox, or is it normal for a gearbox to feel different after a clutch & dmf replacement ?

It wasn't a VW dealer either.

    Thanks.
    Gijoo

Maybe it's just a notion to me but I've always been more wary of a gearbox the smoother the gear changes are. I prefer the feel of shifting metal to the feel of shifting chocolate.

    Another word being "effortless" .

The change in gear was firm but effortless. this feels like its rubbing along something and doesn't go all the way into the normal finishing position in third. I have the urge to force forward another inch or so.

Ah yes, VW passasts, the legendary bastion of reliability.
I've just been looking up several reliability indexes and VW are consistenly poor performers and are routinely outperformed in relibility terms by what are commonly considered "shíte" cars like Kia and Suzuki

Anyway, back to topic, It's normal for a gear change to feel slightly crisper immediately after a clutch change as the new disc can drag slightly until it has bedded in. It should resolve after a little while. Anyway, I prefer crisp, positive gear changes rathar than watery spongy gear levers.

    New clutch shouldn't drag.
If your master and slave cylinders and associated linkages are doing their job clutch should disengage fully and not drag.
It's possible one of your linkage cables was stretched when your mechanic "forcefully" selected gears. Making your gearstick land in slightly different positions to what you were accustomed to.

    Hi guys,

Thought I'd provide an update. Not mechanical in any way so the parts named below could be wrong, so apologies.

had a friend look at 3rd gear last night. He thought it was definately a bit tight/stiff. He said it was most likely the gearbox, but that he'd check the linkage just in case.

Removed the air filter to get a better look, and we noticed that where the linkage joins to the gearbox (I think he referred to it as the gear selector arm/mech) there is a flat plate on top that moves as the different gears are selected in the gearbox.

Underneath this moving plate was the starter motor, and this is where the problem was. The starter motor had a rubber boot/cover where the switch was connected, and this was not on properly(sticking up), the gear selector plate was hitting off/pushing against the rubber boot.

Another thing he noticed, there was a thicker cable(1 of 2) connect to a bracked beside the starter motor connector, the bracket was pointing up(possibly interfering with the gear selector as above), so he turned the bracked horrizontally, making it tidier and definately no chance of it interfering with the gear change mechanism. Once he did this the rubber boot sat on snug.

we put everything back together, He didn't think it was enough to cause the issue, and as I drove it home it was back to normal/perfect.

    Martyc you were very close.

    Thanks for your help guys.
    Gijoo.
