These ugly 'bandits' need to be run out of town

"GOLF HAS long been held in high esteem as a game of honour, a game of principles and ethics that enables its participants to play in vast isolated areas of land in competition without fear of anyone taking advantage of the absence of referees.

The idea is that each competitor is a guardian of the rest of the field and if you see anyone doing anything untoward it is your duty, as an upholder of the principles of the game, to challenge the offender or alert the authorities.

Any suggestions as to how to combat this problem?

Im guessing this was deleted by mods already for reprinting material so I can't waste more time putting posts together about it!

Read the Cheats thread, think he was on here to get ideas for the article.

Article was deleted because of lack of information as to where it was sourced. This has been corrected and should be OK now.

Not to disparage the undoubted influence of boards.ie golf forum, but I'd guess it's more likely that Colin was done out of a prize recently by someone he's suspicious about. Unfortunately due to the way Tom Lewis has been performing recently, Colin's had more opportunity to play competitions at home than he'd probably like. Fair play to him for highlighting it.

While a handicap is granted by the club's handicap committee it is done so within the confines of the regulations of the Unified Handicapping System (UHS) as set out by CONGU. These do not give a committee free rein to manage their members' handicaps. As well as directing what to do in relation to handicaps it also directs what committees cannot do. I suppose it would be easy to say (true and all as it is) that committees can only use powers that legitimately have under the UHS so it is CONGUs responsibility to look at the range of these powers. Regardless of any such changes it is simply not possible to legislate for the guy who deliberately misses three foot putts to skew his score. There is NOTHING that can be done about this. That's it unfortunately ... An un-referreed game depending on honour can simply never police the internal motives and intent of individual players. Depressing but IMHO true.

Long shot but would anyone remember Colin Byrne's article on his visit to see Boca Juniors play a few years ago?

Very memorable article that didnt make it into his book.

It was in the book, I'm almost certain? Surprised at finding an empty spot on the terraces and then being covered in all manner of liquid by away fans

I hadn't realised there was a second one, so I presume the first? The one published in 2004 anyway (only read it recently so it's fresh in the memory!)
