Teacher Recruitment - A new Approach?

    So...

There have been a few threads over the summer regarding job hunting etc.

There is a perception or a reality, depending on personal circumstances, that who you know is the most important.

There are experienced teachers who are left on the sidelines in favour of NQT's

There is the 'job' of looking for a job with trying to find where all the jobs are advertised.

So how would you improve the system?

The following I would suggest as a start
    • A single website for all vacancies
    • Panels for Second Level vacancies from year to year
    • A 'practical' element to the interview - teach a class
    • A common marking scheme that is open to scrutiny stating how many marks are awarded for qualifications, experience etc.

I need to think a bit more - or do I? I'm sure there are plenty of good ideas out there...

Can't see the "practical" teaching a class being very practical. Would all candidates teach the same group?By the time they had candidate no 4, things might be different to how they behave for no. 1. Can't see parents too thrilled to have their kids being used this way either.

In primary you can request your marking scheme and now most jobs go an educationposts.ie

In VEC interviews they make it clear at the start what proportion of marks go for the various headings.

I would only suggest it for the top 2 or 3 on a panel. I think you could justify it if it meant that kids would get a better teacher in September

The same across sectors would be good though. It might cut out all of the nonsense masters stuff too where people feel entitled to jobs because they looked into the life cycle of the furniture beetle for a year.

Still can't see it working in primary, anyhow.

I've had many many interviews over the last number of years - often VEC interviews. In my experience VECs do tend to give criteria out in advance - not always though. But, I have never received criteria from any non-VEC and I have never been told the break down of marks before or after an interview.

This is standard practice for employment in UK PP schools.

I have never been given the criteria before or after an interview. I would guess 5 VEC interviews, at least the same secondary sector

In primary you must get this before the interview.

There should really be a standard system used within the same country in all fairness. Its a mad situation that even though they are all teaching jobs we can already list 3 or 4 ways it is handled.

It's crazy. Also the fact that you can teach for say 3 years and then nothing for a year and back again. If you are good enough for three years you should be good enough for the fourth that's where a panel would be a good idea at least those in the system get to stay in it
