Some of our guests will be travelling four hours to get to our church. I was thinking of asking a local chip van to come and give sausages and chips to all the guests after the church, what do ye think of the idea?

Might be a bit greasy for the clothes people wear to a wedding. Most people will sort themselves out I'd say. Just make sure you have some substantial canapes available as people arrive at the reception.

    Yeah, avoid. Total mess !

I have been at a wedding were a chip van parked up outside the marquee late on to complement the evening bbq but a big no for outside the church. Imagine the chip papers everywhere, messy food, nowhere to wash hands, a queue of people clambering at the chip van instead of getting involved in photos or moving on to the venue. I'd be surprised if the church would be too happy either.

Get some decent food (avoid canapes, expensive waste of time!) set out on arrival (sandwiches, scones etc). If the church is a long drive from the reception consider a pit stop at a local pub , get him to close off an area and throw on some finger food. Last wedding i went to i was starving and new i would eat for a while after the church so many of us stopped off for a pint and sandwiches.

If you give people sausages and chips after the church they will be too full to eat the meal at your sit down reception. Then if you are having after food later in the evening it will be totally wasted.

I was at a wedding recently and it was quite an early wedding and I had to travel quite some distance to get to the ceremony part of it. This meant that I'd had breakfast early that morning and missed lunch time due to the timing of the ceremony. Rather than wait for dinner at 6.30/7pm I stopped off for a light snack on the way to the hotel. This kept me going until dinner time.

Its also worth noting that some churchs are very against the chip van / ice cream van outside their grounds. Granted its outside and so I don't think there is anything they could actually do about it but it could cause bad feeling.

    Totally agree.

Why not go the whole hog and get a few slabs of dutch gold and a few bottles of cheap lidl vodka,

I think its a terrible idea. There is no way I would touch greasy chips and sausages, sober, dressed up, in broad daylight, outside a church. Unless your guests are of the Big Fat Gypsy Wedding ilk I cant imagine anyone who would do that - its just classless.

Make sure there are decent nibbles laid on at the reception to keep people going.

I can never understand fish and chip vans serving sauages and chips!

I would enquire if its possible to book the local hall/church hall/pub function room near the church and serve tea/coffee/soup/sambos.

...you havent eaten since 9am. tummy growling as you come out of the church at 2 or 3pm. theres a van handing out some free fish and chips. people say they wouldnt eat them?

    please.

small portion of chips and bitesized fish. wolfed down. dinner isnt til 6. cheaper and tastier then mayonnaise laden sandwiches back in the hotel lobby.

hand out some packs of those lemon scented wet wipes with each serving.

    great idea.

    Personally I think no.

If people are travelling for four hours I'm sure they will come prepared! They know what they're letting themselves in for. Plus as has been said, it would be very messy with chip wrappers etc and probably very hard for people to eat if it's windy or rainy.

Plus you normally want photos to be taken outside the church...probably better without ketchup stains and kids crying cos they want their sausage rather than getting a quick pic.

    Baaaad idea.

I think weddings in general are classless. So ostentatious.

If that's how you feel CommanderC, don't post in wedding related threads on this forum again.

No way to chip van. Won't be much fun asking people to come back to the church for photos if they are queuing for chips (if you want photos taken).

Also if I was attending I wouldn't want to end up with grease all over me or my clothes. Murphy's law would dictate that I would drop something on my dress.

Adults attending weddings in Ireland know the score. Church bit finishes 2.30-3pm, meal will be served around 6 in hotel. There may or may not be a distance to travel between church and hotel. If they are hungry they will sort themselves out.

If they eat a portion of fish and chips (and I honestly can't see many going for it), they will not eat the dinner which you are paying for.
