This arrived in my letterbox today. I was not aware that An Post had entered into such an arrangement. (Although to be fair it is for payment facilities only and presumably they are free to enter into such a arrangement with any commercial operator).

Anyone else get this? I assume it's a nationwide mail-shot.

Picked one in my local post office a few weeks back, displayed side by side with the Dept of Communications own ASO booklet.

The same crowd who were selling saorview door to door last year and featured on the Colm Hayes show for mi-selling and then they were not removed as a Approved retailer. Strange. I wonder which trade body they are using for installers.

It seems strange that An Post entered into this agreement with MYTV which is part owned by Electroplus who are about to launch the 4Life combi at their trade show which will be the third appoved Saorview combi.

    The sv-600 https://www.electroplustrade.ie/pdf/SV-600.pdf. Sure doesn't Electroplus own 4life also.

No different to any other piece of junk mail they get paid to deliver IMO.

Its very different - an post - a semi state is giving its imprimatur to this crowd.

https://www.mytv.ie/pages/index.jsf?page=13 they've dropped their prices for the combi I see.

MyTV must have not opened their POST from RTE/Saorview. They are still undercutting on terrestrial installs and combi installs( I wonder will they call back to retune UK channels after TP changes on them combi boxes)

This is the box and installation that you get for €295.95 as advertised, it's not a Saorview approved box though is it. Mis leading advertising if you ask me. A very poor decision by An Post to get involved in this.

Any particular reason why you would or should be?

I hope you're happy with the thread you've spawned here. I'm just surprised they haven't mentioned the "vulnerable elderly people" yet ...

The flyer is accurate but the MyTv website is very dodgy. They persist in trying to sell non approved boxes and describe the non approved Terrestrial one as saorview compatible on one page...when it is evidently not.

I presume you cannot pay for the non-approved box through AnPost.:)

I would think anyone with a bit of cop-on has seen through the Saorview brand at this stage & will only spend what they need to continue viewing the channels, if even that.

I suspect quite a few who have an existing system for UK reception will just do without the Irish channels until they need or decide they want a new tv.

It wasn't my intention to troll. I merely felt this may be of interest and worth some discussion on this forum given that it has the appearance of a 'public' scheme (although it isn't) and is a significant entry into the 'Saorview' market.

It is of course a valid business arrangement and I suspect is likely to be quite successful so fair plays to those involved for identifying and executing on the opportunity.

No but the My TV site has a hint of the An Post site about it :D

I got this flyer too. I have Sky at the moment. How do I go about comparing the likes of MyTV combination and other alternatives that don't have monthly fees?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,178 ✭✭✭STB

Ed Sawaday is behind myTv. He is ex head of sales of Sky Ireland and now runs a marketing type firm.

Not quite as strange as the TV licence fee collection agent for Ireland getting involved with one commercial company for the distribution of boxes/installs for Saorview. Quite odd.

    Contact a local competent installer.

    Okay a few issues here.

Ronnie Raygun - there is no need to tell the OP off like this and to be honest your comment bordered on trolling itself. You will be banned for five days next time I see you attack a poster like this. We work on the basis of play the ball not the man.

The thread was reported on the basis that it was "an installer thread". TBH there is nothing in the OP that was, in my view, only competent for installers to answer and it was a legitimate question for the Terrestrial forum to ask why a State body (the Post Office) had entered into an arrangement with a private firm like this. Now having said that the Post Office has arrangements for making payments with other public and private firms and this is by no means unique. I'm not coming down on either side. It is interesting note that this arrangement appears on no less an authority than the Saorview website itself: http://www.saorview.ie/equipment/saorview-approved-at-the-post-office/

I'll leave this thread open and review in 24 hours. Installers are reminded that they are not supposed to be discussing installer related issues in Terrestrial and that bans may issue.

A choice of approved or non-approved boxes: https://www.mytv.ie/pages/orderMainRoom.jsf

Very odd when the flyer has Saorview plastered on it yet the main selling point on the mytv site is saorview boxes from €49.95 + p&p,yet the €49.95 box is not saorview.

Do they have a network of installers to do these jobs & did these installers have to jump through hoops like others have had to do in order to be approved or are they just a man with a van & a ladder who got contract work with mytv?

I suppose the installers are the same one man bands that have been installing sky through electroplus. Most of the electroplus agents were asked to pick up mytv installs when the origional install company pulled out after it came to light about the multi level marketers and their dodgy sales.
Saorview seem to have very little interest in their own guidelines regarding the saorview logo, even a quick look at the main terrestrial threads shows mpeg4 boxes being touted as saorview. Mis selling is rampant.

Now when all the Mrs Murphys and Byrnes. etc goes back to An Post to say my "Saorview" is not working who is going to call out FOC under warranty to repair or replace.
