laptop power issues

A housemate's laptop was dropped a while back, and suffered intermittent charging problems. I took it apart and changed the power jack cable (not directly soldered to MB). Worked fine. Recently some damage was done to power lead very close to the plug that goes in the laptop, some sparks were apparently seen. He got another power adapter, seemed to work. Today it has gone back to intermittent problems, from "AC power" to "battery mode", back and forth.

Its an Asus K53U with Win7, about a year old.
Replaced power adapter seems OK on a meter.

    Any suggestions please.
