sounds like the best camera for her would be a cheap one, if she's bringing it with her in her handbag on nights out.

that sounds facetious, but it's not intended as such.

We wanted a slider one because the ones with the pop out lenses have opened in her bag and broken previously

if it's going to be used to take tipsy photos of her friends on nights out, quality is not a big issue.

the main problem here is that most people who contribute to this forum would not have any experience in the area of the market you're asking about; they'd be people spending reasonable money on good gear rather than looking for cheaper cameras with a specrinific requirement.

i appreciate that my replies may seem flippant, but if your sister is going to take the camera with her on nights out, it's a fair assumption that the main method of sharing these photos will be facebook. a smartphone is the most obvious solution for this, as the quality will be fine, and it will double up for other purposes.

You are looking for a compact. Best advice is to stay branded - Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax.

Argos have a few offers at the moment. See here http://www.argos.ie/static/Browse/ID72/14419436/c_1/1|category_root|Photography|14419436.htm

Expect to pay from €100 upwards to get something that is functional. They'll all suffer the same "issues" if your sister is a photographer, but will be fine if she just wants to snap and share on facebook the following day. Unless you want to spend a deal more then you should go for something like the Canon G12. Small and compact but a real camera (it has lots of manual controls and will produce very good quality images).

    Good luck with it.

What you are looking for are consumer cameras. If you go for the main brands (mentioned above), you shouldn't go wrong. The selection process is more based on design, colour and prices. Visit few camera and electronic stores, check if there are any promotions and get what you like for good money.
