i'm looking to invest in a new wheelset for a bit of racing next year but cant decide between these 2 on paper both look very similar except for price, the shimano is over 100 cheaper, i've heard good things about the mavics but have heard little about the shimano, is there any reason i should choose one over the other.

i race on the rs80s and havent had any problem with them. This racing lark - Its a slippery slope granda. You will be buying all manner of mad stuff next year :)

The Mavics are excellent. Have stayed true for longer than other wheels I've used. Good in cross winds too!

    Aboy Granda, sucked in!
I have the mavics, I love them, firm ride, no flex, true as ever. They'll be sorely missed over the winter!

True, all seasons pretty similar lately! On my commuter/training bike I have basic planetx wheels that came with PX pro carbon 2 years ago, great hubs, bit flexy compared to magic I find.

it normally depends on who is sandbagging more on any particular day.

So I've decided to go with the shimanos as there is very little between the 2 and 120 euros could buy me the tyres as well (any recommedations) thinking of schwalbe durano

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,460 ✭✭✭lennymc

i went to schwalbes, had several punctures and went back to continentals, and havent had any.

Was thinking of the ultremo not durano but was looking at the continetal gp4000 as well, life is full of difficult decisions

continetal are great, i have the gatorskins for the winter and gp4000 for the summer.

The GP4000S seems to be the most popular choice here.

I just replaced the 4000S at the rear. It lasted 10k km without a single puncture and I think it is very good.

I have put the same one back again, but would anyone recommend a tyre model that performs as well in terms of puncture resistance, grip, durability, comfort, light weight, etc? I am looking for the best combination of these factors.

Or schould I keep using them and not trying to fix something that is not broken?

Recently changed to GP4000S, fantastic tyre! I've heard the GP 4-season tyres are good for winter, if you'll be using the wheels over the next few months...

I'd be interested to hear your opinions on the wheels, looking to get a set for racing myself, torn between light, standard or aero rims...

I put Ksyrium Elites on my good bike a few months back. No flex at all (and I'm over 90kg) and still perfectly true after 1500km. Also the rim isn't too high which is good when changing tyres or fixing punctures.

£299 on Planet X which is the cheapest which I could find them for. However, they won't be in stock until 10th Sept. The next best price which I found was £318.34 and the expected dewlivery date would be the 31st if bought today.

Mavic ksyrium elite. Continental grand prix 24mm. Anything else is inferior in this price range and for the usual sportive season.

    (in my opinion)
