Audi A4 (2003) - Oil in Coolant -

Coolant ran low about six weeks ago. Topped up, coolant gone again this weekend. Topped up, noticed half way down to Kerry from Dublin, that the coolant in reservoir was not pure pink anymore but a little oil had got in there.

Brought it to local garage in Kerry, he changed Oil and topped up coolant. He said it might be a leaky thermostat (the temp gauge on the dash is at a constant low mark of 50c - like its not working).

Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?

The car was running fine, no power loss or funny stuff going on.

Sounds like a headgasket failure :o

Head gasket. As for the mechanic saying a leaky thermostat, WTF, thats not even possible for a faulty stat to put oil intot he coolant. At best it's the head gasket or at worst a porous/cracked block.

It could be a faulty oil cooler also. Best to check this out before jumping to conclusions regarding the head gasket ;)

    thanks lads.

Any reputable garages in Dublin who could 'honestly' tell me what the story is?

I thought with the head gasket that the car would not run well at all, lots of smoke from exhaust etc..

It really depends on the situation. I've heard of cars running for months with bad head gaskets and they ran just fine.

You need to have it properly diagnosed, i.e cooling system pressure test, combustion leak test(sniff) test etc.

As George has said, oil cooler failures are common enough on these engines and cause the oil and coolant to mix. A failing/failed head gasket will not always mix the oil and water.

Were about's in Dublin are you based?
