Terence Davies retrospective

    Just a heads up that there's a Terence Davies retrospective starting on Friday as part of the Darklight festival. Davies is one of the great geniuses of British cinema, right up there with Powell and Pressburger. A real visual virtuoso who specialises in memory, a kind of British Terrence Malick if you like. Screenings are at the IFI and The Factory, with a Q&A with the man himself on Saturday, which I'm raging I'm going to miss due to work.

    His best films are the personal ones, with The Long Day Closes probably being his masterpiece, closely followed by Distant Voices Still Lives and Trilogy. The House of Mirth and The Deep Blue Sea are less personal and are generally counted among his relatively weaker efforts, but I'd still recommend them. There's also his fantastic documentary, Of Time and the City.

    Screenings are at the IFI and The Factory, with a Q&A with the man himself on Saturday, which I'm raging I'm going to miss due to work.
