New Engine or 'New' Car

I have a 2002 Renault Clio which needs a new engine it would seem.

I've only had the car since March and have already pumped money into a new t-belt, water pump, coil pack, and head gasket.

I know next to nothing about sourcing a new engine and how much it's going to cost me. Is it even worth it given that it's a 10 year old Clio?

Whats wrong that it needs a new engine?

Presumably it was bought with a HG issue or did somethign happen after it was bought? Not much you can do about haveing to get the timeing belt etc done, thats just routine maintenace. Did you factor it in to negotiations when buying?

Why does it need a new engine ,whats the symptons, it seems more like you need a new mechanic?

The car seemed fine when I got it but, after maybe 2 months, it started showing signs that something was up. It was losing coolant, hard to start and coughing white smoke when it did. The head gasket was done, as I was told this was the problem, but it didn't solve anything. It's been with a few mechanics who haven't been able to tell me what the problem is. Just came back from the latest place and they've told me there's a crack in the engine.

I think that car needs to go to someone who actually knows what's wrong with the car rather than people giving you bullcrap excuses and hoping you'll believe them.

Depending on your location, PM either Nissan doctor or George - as their many posts on this forum show, they know what's what when it comes to cars.

It's quite staggering that a mechanic cannot correctly diagnose what's wrong with a 1.2 Clio, it's not like there weren't many of them sold in this country:rolleyes:!

If you like the car, you could buy a cheap second one and keep it for parts. Might be cheaper than an engine :)

Cheers goz83, hadn't thought of doing something like that; although, I wouldn't really have anywhere to store the 'parts' car.

Still haven't really decided what I'm going to do with it. I'm kind of with Captainspeed on the whole 'needing a new engine' thing. I'm not convinced that it does. Could someone recommend a GOOD garage who can actually diagnose the problem for me? Kildare/Dublin area preferably.

Do you know what tests have been done on the car to diagnose its issues up to this point?

You will get an engine for around 150-200 euro and get it fitted for around 300-350 euro.

    500-550 euro would do it.
