So did you go pro with that belly button whistling or...?

Man, when asking for help on a web forum, we don't read minds, we need as much information as possible.

What kind of computer is it?
    What Operating System is it?
    What version of OS?
Have you tried turning it off and then on again?

    Etc...

Is power going to the speakers?

Is there more than one hole the speaker jack will fit into? Have you tried all of them?

Look in the system tray for some kind of audio icon, open this up. Look for an option like "toggle front panel connector" or something.

Some soundcards are really weird about this. Realtek HD audio cards usually popup a window asking you "what device has been inserted", and you have to click ok before it will play. Other cards like the Asus Xonar default to the front panel.

the only icon in the system tray is the volume control. all switched on

What sound card is it? Did you try manually updating drivers? If it's a create soundcard there should be some software that you can open up and mess with settings. Dedicated software, not the built-in windows stuff.

got it working. uninstalled the drivers. reinstalled them. presto. if the drivers were corrupted, should it not have shown in the device manager ?
    thanks for your help.

Creatives drivers have always been hit and miss (anyone remember they didn't want to even support Vista!?). Glad you got it sorted in the end :)
