Deerhunter clothing

Hi guys, new to this forum so take it handy on me:D I'm looking at getting some deerhunter clothing for the season ahead and was looking for suggestions or reviews. I was looking at the usual Montana or Ram sets but how about the Almati? As most of my stalking involves a lot of walking I don't want something that i will melt in so that probably rules out the Montana but then again when the snow comes and your sitting in a high seat for a few hours I'm sure I'd be glad of it
Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

Have a deer hunter ram jacket for tha last 8 years very happy with it I also use the ram trousers they are good and quite for stalking in but a bit soft when it comes to barbed wire fences but they are my favourite type

Thanks Theti. Anybody know of anywhere near Carlow that stock deerhunter?

I have the montana jacket and the ram bottoms.
They are fantastic, but as said- not made for barbed wire. With the different layers you can take off a couple for the warmer mornings. There is a fair outlay involved, I bought mine second hand...

I tried on the Almati and you will melt in it and it is noisy too - which I was surprised at. Decided on some Fjal Raven gear instead. It is quiet, water-proof and it keeps the right climate for me.
Be reasured though, Deerhunter gear is excellent and even if you decide on the Almati, I am sure you'll be happy with it. It is well made and might fit your requirments better than mine.

Thanks for the help there guys. Deerspotter would you say the Almati is warmer than the ram and Montana ? The problem I have is that there's nobody down here that supply it so I can't even try them on. I'm not to worried about how noisy it is but hate anything too warm.

I thought it was warmer and stiffer too. It reminded me more of motorcycle clothing than hunting clothing. I was disappointed, as like you, I had done my homework and had to get it ordered in. When I tried it on, I knew it wasn’t right. I see them discounted heavily now in hunting shops in Germany, which is a sign they may not have sold as well as they expected! It is rare enough to see Deerhunter stuff on sale.

That saves me spending a lot of money for something that won't suit. Thanks again Deerspotter. I'll have to keep looking I guess. Could I ask if you would recommend any of the deer hunter trousers? I go through a good few pairs of trousers a year and mostly by getting caught on barbed wire and stuff so was looking for a very hard wearing pair but also comfortable if such a pair exist at all?

If you are that hard wearing on trousers, the Almati might be just the job for you. They even have inserts for knee pads, which is really cool.
I use the Fjal Raven G-1000 Hunting trousers and find them super comfortable, but I think they'd rip on a barb wire fence.
I think the Almati would take more of a beating. But they are warmer than you need 90% of the time in Ireland in my opinion.
I'll have a look through the catalogue tomorrow and see if I see something I've had or tried on, that might be the job for you.

Have a look at the kammo clothing site. Coats trousers waterproof, quiet and very tough.

Rivers West gear is best around imo.

I have the same Fjallraven trousers as Deerspotter (Great minds!) and they will rip, but they're tougher than you might think. If you're careful, you'll be okay. They stick hard enough that you can disengage yourself before ripping the trousers open, in my experience. They're fantastically waterproof too.

The sporting lodge (.co.uk) does Fjallraven and they are great to deal with I found. Although Fjallraven is MAD money! Especially with Sterling as it is.

I got mine while on holiday in Holland last summer, so sorry, can't help with local retailers. Think the pair of trousers I got were about €150 and I couldn't be happier with them. Worth every cent.

I agree 100% with you. The material is top class. It even has mentioned that its barbed wire proof. I tested it with a sharp fork when I got my jacket. Wouldn't go through and I forced it!! Its 100% waterproof. Best I've worn yet. 10 years guarantee too

What I like about them is the fact its a fleece type material, the first thing people say when the see it is, 'Jesus you wouldn't think that was waterproof' but by god is it, I've the ranger jacket and trousers and wear them everywhere have mine 3 years now.

Tough, silent and waterproof and light what more could you want?

Its very stylish I must say. The hood on my jacket is detachable and if its warm theres zips under the arm pits to cool one down. The hood moves with your head so your vision isn't disrupted. The pockets have magnets so they are 100% silent to open/close and when open they will stay open if you need them open. I can fit 25 cartridges at ease in each pocket handy if you were doing a night flight. The zips are even water tight. Their jacket cost £130 new but you pay for quality and a good name. Very silent material. They come with 10 years guarantee. Definitely a thumbs up. If I can buy all my camo it be River West from now on

I bought the Almati jacket last year and returned it to the shop (online) after one day. In hindsight it was lucky that the first day I wore it was a real stinker of a day, didn't stop raining for all day. After just two hours it had started to let in and after six or seven hours I was soaked. I took a photo, returned the jacket and in fairness to the shop, they refunded me without a question. The owner of the online shop was a shooter and swore by Deerhunter - 'wear them myself and I've never heard that before' but it has put me off them. I replaced it with a Harkila Arnsdale jacket which was on offer - great job.
