Hi guys. Just letting everyone know the First Fortnight mental health visual arts festival is now taking submissions for the festival in January. This is a high profile event, with artists such as Mary A. Kelly and Maser involved last year. I got a fantastic review on the RTE arts show Arena through it (21.45 in..) :)

Drop in to http://firstfortnight.com/submit/ to submit - you have until 7th September :)

I've given No. 1 daughter a kick up the rear end to get her film in. She made a short film with a mental health theme as part of her Masters, and it's brilliant - she actually filmed it in a disused Mental Hospital (after she saw my exploits there).

Just listened to the piece and it seems as though our very own sineadw is a "young artist and one to watch out for" \0/

Just want to say I knew her before she was famous :D

Is there anywhere that lists, describes or documents previous projects? I'd love to get an idea of the sort of thing that usually goes into this before I start brainstorming.

I'd say your better off dreaming it up yourself, something original rather than copying format of previous winners ....

while you may be deadly serious, that come across is unnecessarily patronising. it's clear what zillah means is not that they're going to copy and paste someone else's work, but that it's useful to see the kinds of things that go into shows and events like this so they can shape their own accordinglly.

it was not meant as patronising - I'm no good with words in these parts - no offence meant , just advice that i believed -

I personally think it's always a good thing to see what's gone before. I can't remember everyone who showed, but here are the main ones:

    http://www.marykelly.ie/asylum.shtml

http://westportartsfestival.com/2011/william-hamilton/ (that was my favourite - can't find a better link to the project :( )

Street art: (this was brilliant as well , and is still visible) http://firstfortnight.com/category/blog/streetart/

    My yoke: http://sineadmcdonald.com/facing.html

Will post more if/when I remember them :)

There's a big difference between copying previous work and understanding the context in which your work will be displayed. Sure, otherwise no one would ever study the history and trends in their craft for fear of copying others.

Thanks Sinead, I'll have a look through that when I get the chance.

Hey guys. I had a meeting with the festival's visual arts director today, and they're actively seeking more photographic entries for balance. Few days left yet :) *nudges boards members*

All excited about my piece too now :D

    Hi,
I might be submitting too many photos but I'm submitting a lot and leaving it up to the organisers to decide if they're interested in any of them.

    Link to my submissions

1st batch of photos represents the general's perception of people with mental health issues.
The 2nd batch represents the lonliness & isolation that people with mental health issues have.
The 3rd batch represent caring & hope.

I know that the quality of many of the photos isn't great but for me it's as important about what the photo represents that just picture beauty.

Hi there. Have you submitted yet? If not, can I suggest you whittle it down and only submit your strongest shots? It's not a curator's place to edit your work for you, and you might find you weaken your whole body of work by submitting weak shots. I've said that without looking at the links yet, mind you. It's just general good practice though, and there are a *lot* of entries to go through.

If you've already submitted, then ignore above :)

Thanks for the comment but I've already submitted.
    1. I wasn't sure how many photos should be in a submission/project- 2 or 10
    2. Some photos could be rejected at a glance (colourful flowers to represent hope)

In general with any C&C postings or picking photos I struggle to pick only a few. I'll learn, eventually.

Really great photo story. Very true that a photo speaks 1,000 words with this.

Deadly! I love that work :) delighted it's being shown. I guess I'll see you on the 4th, or beforehand if you're installing. I'll be the one with the giant letters, freaking out no doubt ;)
