just got offer common entry science dcu. Wondering if after first year can you get any access to Genetics & Cell Biology. I know its not listed under common entry but some have said it might be included.

Just did common entry, there was an option to do genetics but there were only a few places, the people with the best results in biology got in.

As far as I know it's no longer a choice. Don't hold me to that though.

I know there's competition for biotech though.

    EDIT

I think it varies from year to year. We were told at the start of the year it would not be an option but it turned out to be (it has 8 places available). My tutor also told us that even if it had not been an option if you get really good grades (he said in top 2% so is a long shot all the same) you may get a place.

In saying all that it's very hard to get into none the less.

I was also wondering this, I'd be wanting to do Genetics and Cell Biology too, I wish it was a streaming option after first year! So if there's available places and if you have high enough grades you'll be considered?

Yes, from what I hear they're are limited places in BT and GCB from folks from common entry science. There was around 25 students when I first started BT in 1st year and only a few joined in the following year, it would be the same for GCB I reckon.

    Work hard from day 1!

As far as I'm aware it varies from year to year. It was not supposed to be an option this year (I have just finished 1st year) however we were told during the talk for next years courses that it would in fact be a choice. Best bet is to email the head of the course. You'll find their e-mail on the DCU website.

    Best of luck anyway!

    in final year dcu

if you have enough cao points in your lc to do GCB you might be able to transfer internally in to the course from CES if people drop out or change course. all you need is the permission from both course heads to do it
