Hi my daughter has accepted an offer for communications in DCU but she really wanted psychology and didn't realize DCU had that. She has enough points for psychologyl and is now devastated at her mistake. She's accepted the CAO offer . Does anyone know how she can go about transferring ? Should she contact the college asap or wait til orientation? She was also accepted on the DCU Access programme - should she contact these?

Please, any help would be appreciated. She is totally devastated at her mistake. If she hadn't gotten the points, it would be different but knowing that she would be in the course if she hadn't overlooked it is really hard.

Contact the college as soon as possible. Since she has the points she may be lucky and able to transfer to Psychology. But the sooner you speak to the college the better!

Anyone know who would be the best starting point for this? Students union, DCU Access ? Should she contact them now over the phone or wait til orientation when she can speak with them face to face? So upset for her as she has the points and all. Major slip up ..

I would start by e-mailing the Head of the Psychology course. Her details are here: https://www.dcu.ie/info/staff_member.php?id_no=3584.

I would also contact Registry, contact details here: http://www4.dcu.ie/registry/index.shtml

Also, the SU Education Officer. His details are on this page: http://www.dcusu.ie/

I would advise you to mail/ring all these people asap and explain your situation in detail. They should be able to advise you on the next steps.

Konata - thanks so much for the advice. I emailed the students union rep and he said to follow up with Admissions, but at this late stage it was unlikely that she could swap : ( I had thought DCU were someway accommodating to internal transfers? Do you think she should wait til the course starts or should I follow up with Admissions this week? So stressful as she would have put this on her CAO if she had realised, and the fact she has the points without HEAR or Access is so frustrating.

If there's anyone that tried to transfer internally within DCU, could they let me know how they got on and at what point they did the transfer?

I may be wrong but I thought that you could only transfer between similar courses.

I don't think so but open to correction.. I thought once she met the points and other requirements thats the main thing, but that it needs to get signed off on.
Found this link on the DCU site

    http://www4.dcu.ie/registry/forms/pdfs/R39.pdf

I'm just not sure what the reality though is regarding whether the college would allow this so early and if there's places etc. Would really like to hear from someone that has gone through this.

Hey I transferred internally this year, I decided pretty late into my course but I do know a few who transferred only a few weeks into their course. So your daughter should have no problem transferring as long as she has enough points for the course.

Thanks school_sux - Did you transfer from first year to first year of a different course? Do you mind me asking what was involved? Do you know of any of those that transferred very early, were able to get into courses in a different faculty? She would be looking to go to a different faculty, but has the points & requirements for the course she wants.

Anyone else here do an internal transfer?

Yeah I transferred to a different course during second semester but within the same faculty. Once you have the points you can transfer to a different faculty I know of one person who did this quite early. Contact registry to make sure but from my experience it should be no hassle.

Great thanks for that school_sux, good to hear that someone has successfully done that . Will definitely follow up with Admissions and see what they recommend.

Hi Konata, just looking at the other links you posted earlier and from one of those found the names
    https://www4.dcu.ie/registry/setemplate.shtml

Would Celine Jameson be the best person to contact initially?

Thanks again for the help : )

Just one point to add, although internal transfers happen all the time, sometimes the student has to wait until the following year, due to the popularity of the course. Somebody I know did Applied languages for 3 weeks and then decided to transfer to communications, as she didn't like the course. She was told that she would have to wait until the next academic year before she could enter, she'll be starting this september.

Psychology is obviously either a very popular course or doesn't have many places, this is proven by the points for it being so high (500). I'd say she'll def be able to transfer but she may have to wait until september 2013 before she can start the course. Your best bet is just to make an enquiry. Good Luck!

Thanks for that Cardor, that's a good point.. So probably the earlier the better to speak with Admissions? I wasn't sure if she should wait til she's in DCU.. I feel so bad that this happened after all of her hard work and great result but at least there's still a chance to get into the course.

If anyone else has any info please let me know.. She should be euphoric now but I know this is playing heavy on her mind.. Thanks for all the help so far.

A couple of points to note here. Your daughter will not be able to make an application to transfer until she is registered as a DCU student. You will get a letter from DCU giving dates for this. Also she will need to get the Head of Psychology to agree to accept her, this will only happen if there are vacancies on this degree. College cannot allow transfers to take place during the offers process as there would be chaos. Once your daughter registers she will have to follow up this herself as by law the University can only deal with her as an adult.

cairdre - thanks for the info. Will registration take place once she gets her photo taken etc in college for her ID, or will it be earlier? She'll definitely follow up herself but just asked me if I could find out as much as possible to help her as so much happening.

A girl transferred from Enterprise Computing to my class (Computer Applications) in October or November last year. She had already registered as part of her course, engaged in lectures, etc - but must have been talking to people in my class during the lectures we share and decided she liked CA more.
I believe if you transfer courses early within the first semester, you don't get any extra fees or charges for transferring. But some courses are very strict on the numbers they take in, and it may be impossibly for her to transfer.
If push comes to shove, your daughter may just have to wait a year and reapply through the CAO again. But fingers crossed it doesn't come to that! I'm sure she wants to go to college this year :)

Thanks so much.. I think she's actually calming down now and getting really excited about heading to college. Maybe it was just a blip. I'll let it all calm down and sit down with her again after she goes through a few lectures and see what she feels like then. I know she was so excited to get the course but then when she saw the other one it just threw her. Will let things settle as it's been a rollercoaster week . Thanks again

hey dubdub123, I aswell is in the same situation as your daughter, I am looking to transfer to the integrated or general nursing course from Health and Society. I have the requirements and points for the nursing courses too, I just know deep inside that I would not be as interested in the course I was offered than if I was doing a nursing course. I hope that myself and your daughters transfer will go smoothlym *fingers cross*

hey can i ask, say i have to complete 1 year of the course I am in before transferring internally because the course i want to go in is full and i have to wait the next year.,

will i still pay 'free fee' on the first year of the new course or do i have to pay full fees because im starting first year again on a course?.

hey can i just ask. is the full fee the maximum cost of the programme which is the 'EU FEE' (7,144eu) or is it the 'NON EU FEE' (13,200eu).. ? I met up with the chairperson of the course I wan't to go to she said the course is full so I would have to wait next year :(
