Are you coming to DCU this year, and are you interested in radio? DCUfm is Ireland's most successful student radio station, broadcasting 24/7 and we want you to get involved!

My name is Cian, and I'm the deputy station manager this coming year. I first got involved with DCUfm when the then-manager posted on Boards, so I thought I would do something similar, in the hopes of catching the interest of some budding radio stars.

There are plenty of jobs that need doing, from show hosting to producing, editing and scripting. We also have a multi-award winning news team and separate sports team, each of which takes care of several high profile events each year.

The vast majority of our volunteers come to DCUfm with no experience whatsoever, and we offer several free training workshops where we explain how every aspect of the studio works, as well as various workshops dedicated to hosting, producing, editing and so on.

I originally had much more planned to say in this post, but I decided that it would be a lot easier to just take questions from people who are interested. Myself and other members of the management team will answer any questions you have, and hopefully some current members of DCUfm will chime in!

Just accepted my offer this morning for DCU.
Sign me up please! I have little or no experience, unless you count listening to radio an experience
I suppose I have a little bit of experience in editing, been editing videos and such for friends here and there, nothing major.
Wouldn't mind hosting a show either, I have some good ideas if I may say so myself!

Heya! Glad to hear you want to take part!

In order to sign up for the station, you need to join Media Production Society (DCU MPS) during Clubs and Socs week. We'll then send out a giant email about the first DCUfm meeting. The first meeting generally packs the room we book (and it's a big room).

Great to hear that you have some ideas! Write them down somewhere. We ask that people new to the station do what we call an "assigned show" for at least the first semester of their first year with the station, so that they can learn the ropes. These are basically general midmorning-midday music shows. After that, we open up the Show Proposals, and get some really cool stuff in the second semester.

    Howdy,

I'm Ciaran, the Manager of DCUfm, and I'll answer any questions that anybody has along with Cian too!

The important thing to know about DCUfm is that NO EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED!

We're a Student Radio Station. It's in the name. We're all students and we're here to learn. So it doesn't matter if you've never even considered an interest in Radio, you'd be surprised my how many people get hit my the Radio Bug.

Give it a Try! If it's your 1st Year in DCU, you have no excuse! Why wouldn't you want to be able to look back in 10 years and say "F*ck, I was on the Radio!"

I'll definitely be getting involved! I'm studying Multimedia and am thinking about the production side of things as a future career. I did some work experience in a radio station while I was in school and did some basic editing work... might be a bit rusty now though!

No problem! We'll get you up to speed pretty fast.

As a side note, I'm going into final year of the Multimedia degree. It's BRILLIANT! I hope you enjoy it!

As an incoming first year, I'll most certainly be there to sign up for it... There's only so much work experience one can take down here in Radio Kerry!!

I'll definitely sign up for it, no experience at all but sounds like you'll take good care of us anyway! Looking forward to it!

We'll do everything we can to bring you up to speed as soon as possible! As I've said, and as Ciaran has said, you need no experience to join DCUfm, just determination and a love for some aspect of radio. Can't wait to see you there!

I'm also an incoming first year (taking the Journalism course), and whilst I have no experience in broadcasting of any kind, I've been writing about music for three-and-a-half years. I have an editorial position at a UK-based music site called Shout4Music, so I have a small head-start in this sort of thing. It's not like I'd be going in blind, anyway. I'd definitely be interested in getting involved - presenting a music show sounds right up my street!

Sorry about the delay in response. I'm in the USA for a few weeks.

Take a look at our site, www.dcufm.com, for information on proposing a show! We'd love to have you in-studio!

I'd be very interested in getting involved in this as well.

I did a course in radio presenting in Dublin City FM earlier this year :)

YAY Multimedia! Brilliant course, I love it. Do a LOAD of ex-curricular stuff, to make up for the surplus of free time you have near the middle of semesters. But not too much, you'll have a tonne of projects as well.

Cool! Looks like you'll be well on your way to presenting with us in the station so!
    Sounds really interesting.

Hopefully! See you there, if you decide to join!

On Clubs and Socs day (Next Wednesday, I believe) join the Media Production Society, and very shortly after that (think a day) we'll send you an email with more info on how to get involved.

We look forward to seeing you in-studio!
